I narrow my eyes and stand at the other end of the swing set. No one makes a move as we stare into each other's eyes. "MinJi-ah," I speak softly, "please come over here. For me?" She shakes her head, "Your cute little sweet talk isn't going to fool me anymore, Jiyong. We aren't little kids anymore." I smile as I nod in satisfaction, "You've learned I see."
She takes a small step back, "Well, as I get older I kind of have to learn." In return, I take a small step forwards, "Learning is good though." Smiling, she takes another step back, but this time I run at her and as she tries to escaoe, I wrap my arms around her and pull her close to me as I smear the ice cream on her nose.
"Jiyong!" she exclaims in annoyance as I let go of her so she can clean her face. I shrug innocently and laugh. Rolling her eyes, MinJi reaches up to wipe off the ice cream and as a small piece of what looks like gold with a diamon in the center shines bright on her left finger, I suddenly freeze and look at her.
"Is that an engagement ring? How did I not notice that before?" I think to myself as I stare at her hand. Slowly, MinJi looks up at me sa she gives me a small smile, "What's wrong Jiyong?" I clear my throat as I point to her ring, "You're engaged?" Laughing lightly, she shakes her head, "No, it's a promise ring, but in time I will be married."
Hearing her words, I feel as my heart shatters into a million little pieces. How can the girl I've loved since childhood be promised to get married?

A few days later...
"Jiyong, why have you been acting so strange?" MinJi asks.
I sigh slightly as I fake a smile, "I didn't think I was."
MinJi twists her lips into a pout as she scrunches her eyebrows, "Oh, well, you have. You have begun to act more---distant. Is something bothering you? Did another scandal break out?"
"No. The fact that you are promised to a complete jerk is what's bothering me. Come on, Minji-ah! You're smarter than this! How do you not see the way he's playing and toying with your heart?" I think to myself as I chew my lip slightly.
"I'm just a bit tired," I lie quickly with a small chuckle.
She scrunches her eyebrows as she sets her hand on my shoulder. Her stare paralyzes me as I try to look away, but she grips my shoulder tighter.
"Yah, Jiyong. Tell me what's wrong," she pleads.
Sighing, I realize I can't continue to run away from her questions. I have to tell her what's wrong sooner or later.
Taking her hand off my shoulder, I point to her ring, "This. I just---I don't understand it. Why are you promised to him, MinJi-ah?"
She pulls her hand away as she twists the ring around her finger anxiously, "Because I love him and he's the one for me."
I raise my eyebrows, "Oh, really?"
Her expression changes as I can sense the anger slowly rising up inside her as she straightens up in her seat, "Yes, really! Do you have a problem with that Kwon Jiyong?"
"Kwon Jiyong," I think to myself, "she's angry."
I looked her dead in the eye as I leaned in towards her, "Actually, yes! I do have a problem with that! You know why? He stares at other girls. He has cheated on you before, but he swore that he would change. He always ignores you. He spends your money when he should be buying you things. Oh, and the real kicker? I don't believe that he loves you."
MinJi suddenly turns silent as hurt fills her eyes.
Hurting her. That was the last thing I wanted to do.
Reaching out to take her hand, she resists at first, but I force her hand into mine as I lift her chin up so her eyes are looking into mine, "MinJi-ah, I'm telling you this because I care about you. I don't want to see you hurt again! I'm just telling you the truth! I don't understand why you don't just date someone else! Someone who will treat you better!"
She pulls away from me roughly as she stands and looks down at the ground for a bit as if she's contemplating her thoughts. Suddenly, she spins towards me with her pointer finger pointed at me as she yells, "Well, you know what? I can't date someone better because not only did you never ask me out, but guess what again? You are always busy! You never have time for relationships, so don't tell me that I need someone better because you all are the same!"
I feel as my heart begins to pound. I can hear a ringing noise in my ears as butterflies begin to go wild in my stomach.
"D-did you just say-" but she cuts me off as she shakes her head, "Don't worry about it, Jiyong. I-I-I have to go."
Before I can question her further, she walks away quickly; her heels making a click-clack noise on the ground as she does so.
I lean back in the seat as I look around at the park. Everyone suddenly turns their heads when I meet their eye contact. Usually, I would care about this sort of thing, but I honestly don't give a damn anymore. All I am focused on is MinJi and her hidden feelings for me.
I should have asked her out sooner.
