A large timer appeared in the middle of the sky, replacing the sun. On it were 24 "names", really just subject 1-24, as well as a scoreboard and a timer. The timer was 3 seconds from the start.

The subjects all shot forward to the middle, some stopping short at the bloodbath to follow. The killer contestants were using everything they could to kill or hurt the innocent bystanders. This included their fists, the loot, or even the chests themselves. By the time the slaughter ended, 7 had been murdered. Me and Jane turned and ran as fast as they could to the forest.

Jane stopped suddenly about 150 blocks in. "Why, hello there"

A chest sat in a small clearing, hidden by leaves and grass. Jane ran forward, grabbed a stone sword, and tossed me an iron ax, donning a chain-mail tunic in the process. She left an iron helm in the chest for me. Then we ran again. We ran until Jan was convinced we had escaped, then with a massive sigh, Jane slumped down against a tree. She put her head in her hands and I heard quiet sobs for all those lost. I leaned in a pat her shoulder reassuringly.

"Hey, it's not all bad. If you hadn't been there, that could've been us"

        "Yeah"

"And you know you couldn't help them"

"But they died, Jacob! And all I did was stand there and watch. I was a coward, fled with my tail between my legs!"

"Hey, Hey, HEY! Don't be thinking like that, Jane. I need you. Everyone needs you. Imagine all the people you could save"

She sniffed, "But David isn't gonna be one of them"

         "Why not?"

Now she burst into tears. "I saw him! He just had to get that bow...", she sniffed, "Just before I turned away, I saw someone come at him with a pickax... I can't save him"

I took in breath. "But what would he want you to do? Would he want to die in vain, or would he want you to stand up and rescue the others? David's death is horrible, but we can't do anything for him anymore. We need to focus on the living, not the dead. There are 15 other people out there that need our help and comfort. So make your decision, lay down and die like a dog, or stand up and die a hero"

She sighed again. "He would want me to fight" She looked down at her feet, I thought she was about to cry again but instead she planted her sword firmly in the ground. I looked into her eyes and saw a flame burning in them.

           "Let's do this"
