The dinner wasn't much, just some bread, steak (I didn't know that Jeff's dad taught him how to make AMAZING steak!), and some water. We got Jeff settled in. It occurred to both of us this is the longest we've went without being attacked.
"Yeah, I can't believe it either," I say as Jeff points it out.
We all leave and head to the hideout.
"Hey, Eric, thanks for the shelter and food, it's greatly appreciated," I say.
"No problem, we've needed more of people like us for a while since. . ." his voice trails off.
"Hey, you two c'mon, we need to sleep for training tomorrow. I've got a lot planned," Kate says smugly.
"Danget, forgot it's your day tomorrow," Eric whispers under his breath.
We all head to bed, I lay in my bed for what seemed like hours searching for sleep. I kept thinking about what could happen. Most of it was bad but some turned out good.
I barely slept. I woke up after every hour. Eventually morning comes around. I only slept for about three hours. . .
❇ ❇ ❇
"NICK!" yells Kate,"GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF BED AND GET READY FOR TRAINING!"
"I'll be down in a minute," I groan. I get dressed. I throw on a red sleeveless shirt and a pair of basketball shorts.
I grabbed a quick bowl of cereal(Cheerios because they are amazing) and run outside. Everyone was wearing pretty much the same thing. The boys were all wearing sleeveless shirts and shorts and Kate was wearing a tank top with capris.
I saw Josh, Eric, and Kate sparring with each other. Eric jabbed at Josh, who easily parried the attack. He looked up and saw me, whispered something to the others and walked over to me.
"Morning sunshine," he says jokingly.
"Hey."
"You ready?" he asks.
"I guess," I reply.
"Well then, summon your sword," he commands as he walks back. I see the head of something poking out of his shirt.
"Hey, Josh. Is that your marking on your back?" I ask.
"Oh yeah. It's a manatee. Don't really know why that was my "chosen" mark," he says laughing.
I summon my sword and start sparring. It was pretty fun. I would jab, have it parried and attack with a blow to the shin. This went on for about an hour. We took a short break when Jeff walked over. I could tell he enjoyed his sleep, since he looked like he just woke up.
"Hey, mind if I join in?" He asks, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"Sure, you'll just have run back and grab your sword," Eric says before I can.
He runs back and grabs it -which took like ten minutes-. We start to spar and after about fifteen minutes of fun, we hear a roar from deep in the city.
"Arrg, not again!" Eric swears under his breathe.
"What not again?" I ask, a little scared myself.
"It's the Unk, a dragon that has been growing since it landed, waiting till it's big enough to overpower us. That is why we need more of us to overpower it," Eric explains.
"Oh, and since most people died we can't find anyone... Tough," I say, pondering how many people had this power but didn't know.
Another roar echoes through the city. We instinctively look over and see small black figures flooding the streets.
"This is not good. Nick, Kate, Jeff, get ready for the battle of your life, because it might be your last," Eric says, getting into his ready stance with his gleaming red sword in his hands. Kate materializes her bow as do I. Jeff stands, waiting with his sword on his hips. The figures grow bigger and bigger, pulling lamp posts out of the ground, snapping them in half and giving the other half to the closest monster next to them.
They start running faster and faster. Then we charge...
