Shane

I slid the answer button without looking at the caller I.D., anxious to get out of this conversation. I was about to speak when a familiar voice beat me to it, "I've been thinking." Skylar started, "You know, about the thing you told me about at Starbucks. That if he doesn't want me I shouldn't care and all that, and I agree. But, you have to know that it's not easy to let go that easily. Have you ever been in love?"

I sat there for a few seconds. "I'll call you back in a minute." I replied, then ended the call without waiting for her answer. I turned back to Daniel. "You have to go." I acknowledged, taking the opportunity.

"What?!" he snapped and I pulled him up from the couch and started shoving him towards he door. "We haven't finished talking!"

"And we probably never will with your idiotic questions, now you have to go." I retorted, opening the door.

"Why?!" he screeched.

"Because," I started trying to scramble my thoughts for an excuse, "because, my girlfriend is coming over." I lied.

"Oh!! You have a girlfriend?!" he yelled his face lighting up. "Wait, then why did you kiss Skylar? Are you playing her?!" he accused.

I mentally cussed myself for thinking up such a terrible excuse. "No! Justina and I actually started dating yesterday." I lied once more.

"You have to tell me all about this 'Justina' tomorrow! You'll be at school, right?" he asked.

"Um, yeah, no, maybe, I'll see." I stuttered pushing him out the door. I was about to shut it in his face when it hit me. I quickly swung the door open again and he froze. "How did you get my address, anyways?" I questioned.

He started smiling. "Oh! Valerie gave it to me!"

"But, Valerie doesn't know where I live." I raised my eyebrows.

His face fell. "Well, apparently she does."

I shut the door slowly, trying to remember if I had ever given her my address. Not even the school knew my address. They had been in on the whole mission so they respected my privacy. After I had been fired, my boss called them and told them that a new agent will be coming in. I'm sure if I return and claim that I'm still investigating the mission but for another head officer of the UGDA, they'll let me in.

As I was about to step up the stairs, my door bell rang. At first I thought it might be Daniel, with more of his stupid questions, but when I opened the door, I realized that it wasn't.

"I was on my way over when I called you. I was going to tell you that on the phone but you hung up." Skylar explained.

"And how did you get my address?" I questioned.

She smiled. "Oh!-"

"Let me guess. Valerie gave it to you." I guessed.

She raised her eyebrow. "Valerie? What? No, I don't talk to her." She blushed and continued, "Actually, I told my therapist about you and she said that she will ask around town and find your address for me."

"You could have asked me for it, you know." I pointed out.

Her face fell. "Oh, well, I suppose that would have been easier."

We fell silent for a while and then I realized she was still standing outside. I look at her frantically, upset at myself for forgetting my manners. "Um, come in, sit down." I smiled.

She looked at me shyly and stepped in. "Thank you." she breathed. I walked behind her, guiding her into the living room. She sat down on the couch, sitting up straight.

"Relax." I chuckled. "I'm not the President. You can slouch. Put your feet up. Take your shoes off. Let down your hair. Jump up and down. I don't care, you can be comfortable."

She giggled. "Let's get to the point." she said, suddenly getting serious.

"Okay, let's continue the conversation that we were having on the phone. To answer your question, yes, I have been in love one time. Actually, I'm still in love. You see, she has beautiful, long, dark hair. Her eyes are as big and blue as the sea. Her perspective of the world is spot on. And she's different. She speaks with such intelligence and care. She's special. She changed me. Though, I don't know if that's a good thing, because I feel like no matter how much I love her she will always love an asshole that can't take a damn hint." I explained quietly.

She twirled her hair nervously. "Shane, it's not easy. He's not able to love." she explained.

I knew that the next thing I would say to her would hurt her, but it had to be done. No matter the pain she felt, it might just cut that rope she's holding on. She'd go flying back, but she won't hit the ground, I'll catch her. "Then why does he have a date with Valerie tomorrow?" I questioned.

Skylar's eyes grew and started shining. "He what?" she asked in disbelief, her voice cracking.

"They're going to the movies after school." I informed her.

"And he said yes." It wasn't a question. I was a statement to herself, to let her brain catch up with her feelings.

All I could do was nod. She started slouching more and more as her sadness grew. Though the depression faze didn't last for long. Before I knew it, her head snapped up and she had a crazy look on her face. "I'm going to destroy him." she raged through tears. "He knew." she chanted. "He knew."

And without another word, she stormed out of my house, slamming the door behind her.
