Max POV

"We HAVE to go back!" I was in hysterics.

"I know, I know Max but stop and think." Fang had me by the shoulders and wouldn't release me.

I may be a bird kid stronger than the average man but Fang, well, he was a bird kid too and a man at that. He topped me in strength, I couldn't wiggle myself free, I couldn't kick him, I didn't want to hurt him but I needed to do something.

"Fang, my family is down there! My mother is down there! Everyone I care about with the exception of you and Angel is trapped in those godforsaken caves!" I glanced behind Fang through the watery film welling in my eyes at Dylan who had clearly been hurt at his exclusion in my rant.

A faint smirk crossed Fang's face as he too glanced behind me at Dylan. Then at that moment while his attention was diverted from me, I yanked myself free from his grasp and shot for the air like a bullet.

"MAX!" his voiced dialled out of earshot as I soared higher and higher into the air. With my super speed during flight I could take myself as high as physically possible and drop like lead into the water. I never went to school but I did learn about force on the Discovery channel, back when we lived in the mountains.

A faint image of our old cabin pushed its way through the blockade in my mind but only for a Nano second before I shoved it away.

I kept flying, flying all I was focused on was getting as high as I could. I was aware of the three other bird kids trailing me into the sky but I didn't care I was going to save my babies, my family, my loved ones at whatever cost because I AM Maximum Ride.

Fang's POV

She is nuts! Max has officially snapped. Her wheelchair off its rocker, her train has derailed its tracks, I didn't know how else to put it. This idea was crazy; she had no idea what she was doing. Yes we are strong; we have enhancements that enable us to manoeuvre in water but this? This was outrageously stupid.

I heard the flap of wings as Angel and Dylan stopped their increase in height to hover hundreds of feet below me. I never took my eyes off of Max. She didn't pay attention to the fact that loosing Gazzy, Iggy and Nudge affected us all. We couldn't save the world. We did our best but I couldn't lose her too. I loved her.

I sped up, flying as possibly fast as my wings would carry my hallow bones. I raced after her as she burst through clouds at 200 mph! She needed to slow down. I knew exactly what she was going to do; hitting the water at that speed, from the distance she felt was necessary wasn't going to propel her to the caves, no; the force of impact when she hit the water would KILL her. I was not going to lose her.

"MAX! MAX!" I screamed after her. She said nothing. She was out of hearing range, I wasn't fast enough but I wasn't going to give up.

I broke the clouds in the same trail as Max; I followed her up and up. When was she going to stop? When was she finally going to realize this was immensely stupid?

I could feel my head becoming heavy as the high pressure pushed against the walls around my brain, its crushing weight lying on my skull.

Then out of nowhere she stopped. She stopped moving, flying. She just hovered.

This was my chance, I could stop her, and I could make her come to a realization that she needed to live to rescue them. I didn't dare take my eyes off of her. I neared her, I grew closer and closer. Then all of a sudden she hurled herself forward into a tight arrow, wings curled like a hawk diving for prey.

"NO!" I flailed frantically in the air; I turned and shot myself at her. I may be light as a feather but I was heavier than she. I could feel the wind whipping my face, it stung as it whipped over and over. I could feel myself falling faster and faster.
