Ray stepped out of the taxi, paying the driver. She quickly thanked him and walked towards the park Namjoon had told her to meet him in. The park was full of families, friends, couples, and the occasional loners. It reminded her of the first night she spent with Namjoon. The warm atmosphere of the park, even though it was the middle of winter, was just what you'd expect in the holiday season and she loved it.
She brushed by, taking in everything around her. There were lots booths selling food, toys, jewelry, and hundreds of other things. A few kids ran by, bumping into her. Their parents rushed over and apologized.
"It's fine! Really. You should go look after them, shouldn't you?" she assured them. They quickly apologized again and ran after the kids. Ray continued on her journey to search for the meeting spot.
She arrived about five minutes late. He said the bench by the bridge on the lake... He might be a little bit late.
Ten minutes of waiting later, he still wasn't there. Just as she was about to call Namjoon, he called her instead. She picked up, afraid to hear something about him not being able to make it.
"Namjoon?" she asked. "Where are you?"
"I should be asking you. I got here fifteen minutes ago. Where are you?"
"What do you mean? I've been waiting at the meeting spot for ten minutes. Maybe I read it wrong?"
"Bench, bridge, lake."
"Shit. Oh my god. Namjoon I thought you were supposed to be smart."
"I am smart. What did I do wrong?"
"Did you want to mention which bridge and which side?"
"Oh shit."
"Right. So where are you."
"West side, last bridge?" he asked rather than stated.
"Okay. That's about ten minutes away if I walk."
"We can shorten that to five if I walk towards you."
"Cool." Ray told him her location and started walking. They talked over the phone as they walked, Ray jokingly scolded her boyfriend--she was still getting used to that word--for not thinking that through more.
"Ah, I see you."
"Oh! I see you too!" Hanging up, they ran towards each other. Namjoon pulled Ray into a hug.
"God, I thought you ditched me or something!" Ray exclaimed.
"Wow! I thought trust was important?" Namjoon replied.
"Chill! I trust you. Let's go sit down, alright? The fireworks are starting soon." They did as she said, waiting for the lights to go off.
Right on time, the fireworks started. Ray watched in fascination. She hadn't seen any in a long time so it was something she really enjoyed. Namjoon watched her, glad she was enjoying everything.
Ray looked at him. It was the perfect moment. Dark sky, fireworks in the background, sitting on a bench by a lake, it was beautiful. Namjoon was staring at her, she was looking into her eyes, they were getting closer to each other. She could feel his warm breath on her lips, as he could probably feel hers.
But loud noises just had to scare her. A particularly loud "boom" went off, scaring Ray and causing her to hide behind her hands.
"Ah, shit," she muttered, ruining the moment even more. Namjoon laughed, realizing how awkward the situation was. Ray soon joined in, laughing at the ridiculous situation.
"Well that was awkward," Ray said.
"Quite."
"Yeah, um, let's just watch the fireworks then."
"Uh, yeah. Right."
After the fireworks, Namjoon took Ray around the park, occasionally buying snacks for the two of them. They watched some street performers sing and dance. Before long, they were counting down with hundreds of other people in the park, watching the fireworks go off again as they hit zero. Namjoon pulled Ray into his arms, giving her the hug he promised.
"As promised, first hug of the year," he said, a stupid grin on his face. He pulled away and leaned down. "And also, first kiss ever."
Namjoon closed the last few centimeters between them, doing as he said and giving Ray her first kiss. And hey, it was romantic as hell.
