-Patrick's POV-
My eyebrows furrowed together as I rolled up, facing away from her, "Wait, what do you mean your husband's coming back home in the next few days? I thought you said he was on tour."
"He is! But...his birthday and Chase's are coming up and he really wants to see him," Gwen replied, keeping her gaze locked on her lap, "I have to let him come home. It's the least I can do to make him think that everything's still okay."
I glanced back over my shoulder at her, "So you haven't told him about us, then."
"Of course I haven't told him," She murmured, pulling her knees into her chest and wrapping her arms around her legs, "Why would I?"
"Why wouldn't you?" I snapped, barely glancing over my shoulder at her.
"Why wouldn't I?" She repeated, "Because!" A brief moment of silence blanketed over the room as I anticipated a better response, as if she actually thought that "because" was going to suffice. She got the hint and heaved a sigh, continuing, "Because...Because I don't want to lose him. For Chase's sake."
"Are you sure? Because last time I checked, you were completely done with him. You wanted nothing to do with him and you were ready to take Chase and leave. And if I'm correct, that was...less than an hour ago. Right before we-"
"Okay!" She cut me short, "Okay, maybe I did say that. But...I don't know, it's just that...there are some days where I feel like it could really work. Like he and I are finally gonna get it right. But then there are days like today. When he makes me want to tear my fucking hair out."
I shook my head and swung my legs over the side of the bed. "You need to make up your mind, Gwen."
"I have," She muttered, sneaking up behind me and snaking her arms around my front, keeping me there, "Patrick, you're the one I love and want to be with, okay? You're everything he's not. You love me for me and not someone I was in high school. Your band isn't more important than me, or Chase. And most importantly..." She slid her hands down my chest and towards my boxers, "...you really know how to-"
"Mommy?"
Our heads snapped in the direction of her closed bedroom door.
"Mommy, I had a bad nightmare and I can't fall back asleep," Her son's voice emanated from the hallway, followed by a sniffle as he started to cry, "Can you come and sleep with me? Please?"
Gwen groaned and called back to him, "I'll be there in a minute, Chase. Just go back to your room and wait for me, alright?"
"Alright..." He mumbled, trudging back to his bedroom down the hallway.
She rested her head on my back and exhaled softly. "I'm sorry, Patrick, but I've got to-"
"Yeah, I know." I looked back at her, smirking. "Go play Mommy."
She grinned and punched me in the shoulder playfully, getting out of bed on the other side and pulling out some pajamas from the dresser, quickly slipping them over her lingerie and leaving the room.
I sighed and lied back down, folding my hands on my bare stomach and staring up at the ceiling.
It had been like this for almost two years now, with Gwen and I meeting up whenever her husband wasn't home, which was most of the time seeing as his band was still going strong and mine, on the other hand, was not. We were on a little "hiatus", which was why I was always available to come over whenever Gwen called me.
I didn't know if her husband knew about us or not. She hadn't told him, but that didn't mean he didn't know. He saw the way she and I connected while his band and mine were touring together. And I saw the jealousy that glowed in his eyes when we were anywhere near each other. But he never said anything, or did anything. He just smiled and laughed, putting on this front and acting like we were friends, when - behind closed doors - we weren't.
She told me that she didn't love him anymore, that he didn't love her either, and that it was only a matter of a conversation and a few signatures before they called it off. She told me she wanted to be with me, that I was the one she truly loved, and that all these secrets and all these lies would end before I knew it. But I found it hard to believe, especially when she'd told me that more times than I can count on my fingers and toes combined.
"Hey, Pat?"
I tilted my head up and saw Gwen standing in the doorway, leaning against it and smiling at me. And beside her, clinging onto her legs, was Chase, looking at me with tired eyes, his sticky cheeks a rosy red color. In his arms was his baby blanket and his favorite stuffed animal, a teddy bear I was pretty sure Gwen told me Alex gave him.
"Tell him what you want, Chase," She urged him softly, glancing down at him.
The little boy cocked his head back to look up at her before shifting his gaze over to me, murmuring shyly, "I...I want to sleep with you guys."
"Apparently you've got magical powers that keep nightmares away," Gwen added, her smiling growing wider, "I think he said it's got to do your voice or something."
"Yeah," Chase agreed, his blush intensifying.
I chuckled and moved over in the bed. "Of course you can sleep with us, Chase." I pulled the covers back and patted the spot beside me.
He grinned widely before coming out from behind his mom's protection and running up to the bed, jumping on it and getting comfortable beside me. Gwen entered the room shortly after and closed the door behind her, joining her son and me in the bed and pulling the covers over the two of them, the three of us underneath them.
Chase yawned and hugged his teddy bear, mumbling sleepily, "Hey, can I ask you something?" He gazed up at me, struggling to keep his light brown eyes that matched his mother's open.
"Yeah, buddy?"
"Can you sing your song?"
"Which one?"
"You know...the one about bees and bears,. He turned his small body away from me and towards his mom.
"Oh, that one," I replied. Gwen met my gaze, the corners of her lips curled up ever so slightly. "Yeah, I guess I can sing it for you."
"Yaaaaay," He whispered with what little enthusiasm he could produce, his eyelids drooping.
I smiled and cleared my throat before singing softly, "Honey is for bees silly bear, besides there's jellybeans everywhere..."
