“It won’t last forever and you know it”. He told me through our mind link as we walked hand in hand, scouring the streets for danger.

I know it won’t. But the war council sent us here for a reason. If there wasn’t something weird about this city then they would never allow me act the way I have been."

The city streets were looking especially eerie tonight, emphasising my point of something thing being...wrong. Perth wasn’t the same as other cities.

“The streets feel wrong because there is something nasty to your left.”

It goes deeper than that and you know it Cam. But that does feel a little nasty. What do you think it is?”

A fae maybe?”

Couldn’t be. This is too far out of their territory. Unless it’s drunk and confused.”

We better point it in the right direction then.”

We rounded the corner to find the last thing we were expecting. An Ardenel. Horrible looking things Adrenels were, with their big yellow eyes and blue-purple skin stretched out over their long body showing every big and little bone. This Ardenel was bent over what seemed to be the body of an elf. Interesting. Elves were tough sons of bitches and much tougher to kill. Our hands immediately went to our belt and the array of blades and other weapons we kept there.

"No, no! You do not understand! I found her like this!" he said shaking his head, eyes wide and bloody hands gesturing peace. Ardenles were fighters and perfectly capable of disembowelling an elf girl this way. My hand didn’t leave my blade as I said;

"What do you mean you found her this way?"

"I mean I was simply walking past and I smelt blood so I went to investigate and I just found her like this. I swear it!"

"Do Adrenels like meat?"  Cam asked through the mind link.

"No, they're vegetarians".

"Then what the fuck?"

"Charming Cam, and how the hell would I know?! I’m just as confused as you here. Keep your guard up."

The Ardenel still had the look of confusion plastered across his face but relaxed a little as I dropped my hand from my belt. "You need to leave and go back to your own dimension. Now." I told him. He stopped looking confused and began to look angry.

"Hold on one moment, I did not do anything wrong here. And I am here on official business so I can not leave until I am finished!" this got my attention.

"What kind of official business?" Cameron demanded, straightening from his fighting stance but his grip remained on his blade but still managing to make air quotes with his hands.

"The kind that is for the Vellocet Commander's ears only. I was told she was expecting me."

"I wasn't told about any kind of visitor." my hand slowly moving back to the hilt of my knife.

"You are the commander?" he laughed "but you are just a girl!" he was holding his sides with bloody hands when my fits connected with his jaw knocking him back against grime covered wall. Before he could react or even process what had happened, my wickedly sharp knife was at his throat drawing the tiniest drops of thick silver blood.

"Never, Under estimate me again." I hissed through my teeth.

"I-I am so s-sorry Commander, please forgive me." he cowered. I released my grip on him and stepped back.
