“Hey come out. He left ages ago. You can come out now.” Hope was trying to calm me down. I wouldn’t be calmed.

“ If I come out I will  hurt someone.” I was packing. I couldn’t stay any longer. All I am is trouble.

I could hear Hope open the door. She gasped when she saw all of my things on the floor and me going through them.

“You’re not leaving, are you?” I could hear the worry in her voice. She didn’t want me to leave but I had to; I didn’t belong here. I was too wild to be a rich proper girl forever.

“Come here and let me help you pack.” Allen had come in.

“Allen! What are you doing!?” Hope was panicking. I looked at Allen. He meant it when he said he would help. He wasn’t happy about it, but he meant it.

“Hope, you and I both know that  we can’t change her mind once it is made up. The most we can do is give her what she needs and keep her from taking extra.” He took the bag I had away, and waved for me to follow him.

He lead me to the attic and opened an old trunk. Inside was some stuff that I had never seen. There were swords, armor, and other things that a man would need in the army. But there was something else, too. It smelled like home.

“You will need to blend in and a woman on her own doesn’t blend.” I could change the way I looked very easily, so he was telling me to make myself look like a man. I could do that.

“ALLEN!” Hope was crying.  She hated it when Allen had to leave, and now I, the only other person that she cared deeply about, was leaving.

“These were you father and brother’s. I think you should use them. Just wait one week. Then you can hide for a few weeks so it will look like you ran away. That way there is an excuse for you to be gone. I go back  to work in a month and I can take you with me and then I can watch you and tell Hope how you’re doing.” He was begging me to wait and not leave now. He was thinking about what was best for everyone, especially Hope.

“Fine, I will wait. But I I will get something that I will need in town during that week and after  that I will stay here  and decide how I want to look as a soldier.” Hope needed some time to get used to the fact that I was leaving. She still looked pretty shocked.

“Here go to town and get some of the things you need and get something nice for your sister.” He handed me a small bag of emas syiling, gold coins that were worth more than any other coins we had.

With that, I went to change into more appropriate clothes. That was another thing I hated about being a rich. There is an outfit to wear for everything, and you have to wear it.

When I got to market, I stopped and looked around. What should I get Hope to make her feel better? I passed a small stand that had lockets that you would put hair and a picture in. You could even get them engraven.

“How much is it for an engraven one?” I asked the clerk. He was  short  with brown hair and glasses.  He pulled out a list with a bunch of prices on it.

“What would you have engraven on it?” He had turned to look at me.

That was a good question. What would I have engraven on it? I didn’t normally do stuff like this so I didn’t know. I thought about it for a while. Then I knew exactly what to say.

“Your sin, Maryann.” The clerk looked puzzled and confused. I didn’t blame him. It was a very strange thing to have on a locket, but it was our little inside joke.

“OK. If that is what you want.” He looked at his list and groumbled.  “That will be 3 Perak, 5 Gangsa, and a Tembaga.” (When you are informal, you leave off the syiling. Perak is a silver coin; 4 of those is one Emas. 7 Gangas, or bronze coins, is one Perak. And 9 copper coins or Tembabas, is one Ganga.) I pulled out 4 Emases and got back the change as the clerk went over to the locket selection.

“Pick a locket.” He gestured to a stand covered in lockets. They were every shape and size. Hope... Hope... Hope...  What would Hope like?  I picked some up and looked in them. Some had a picture on one side and a place for a lock of hair on the other. Others you put pictures on both sides. Then I got it.

“May I get this one, please?” I held up a oval locket that had a cross with roses wraped around it imprinted on it. The emprint was very elabrte. Little details in the roses brought them to life.

I decided on a oval shaped locket that had two roses engraven on the front. You could put a small portrit of someone on one side and a lock of thier hair in the other. She would like that.

Here it was a tradition to leave something with each of your family member when you left home for a while and you had to have somthing of thiers, even if you or the other person dies. Hope insisted on Allen and I following it, even though I never left so she didn’t have anything of mine.

“This one.” I handed it to him. He told me to come back in an hour or so and got to work. I walked around until I found some one to do the portrit.

“Hello, I can I paint you a portrit today?” I nodded and handed him what was to go on the inside of the locket.

“Okay then. Sit right there and hold still.”He got busy but I couldn’t help notice him looking at my hair every two or three seconds which got really agrrivating really fast. He must have noticed.

“I’m sorry if I am bothering you it is just that I haven’t seen a blonded in a long time.” I nodded to show that I understood. Here it is very rare to meet a natral blonde. I my self had only meet a grand total of two besides my self: Aaronon, and the boy that riuned my life, Aron. Everyone else had black or some sort of brown hair. Hope was burenette so now one thoght she was weird but it was just another thing to my list of things that made me a freak.

It seemed to be ages before I was done there. I was glad to so I could get away from that man that wouldn’t stop looking at me. Even If he was paniting me he was looking way to much; it was creepy.

After I picked up the locket, I stoped by a cloth rack. There were alot of nice fabric but I only needed a plain black.

I bought the fabric and went home.

Hope was in bed. I snuch up to my room so she wouldn't notice I was there.

I put the portrit in the locket and cut of a bit of my hair and added that too. I would leave it for her when I left.

I turned to the cloth and the armor the allen had moved to my room.

In our army everyone had to had armor but we could personalize it any way we wanted to. So that is what I am going to do.

I waved my had over the cloth first. They now were plain black clothes, a long sleeved shirt and long pants.

Next was the armor. I only needed part of it so not all of it changed. What did change became guards for the lower parts of my arms and legs and breast plate.

For the rest of the week I slowly chage the way I looked. I shorted my hair, flatened my chest, deeped my vocie, and made slight agustments to my face.

By the end of the week I was ready.
