So I got inspiration to write this after listening to a Mericcup fanmix on 8tracks called "The Only One Who Really Knew Me" (by 8tracks user aryamlady) and a song called "My Featherbed" by Karliene came up. There's a video on the side so you can listen to it when it comes into play later on in the story~

It was the afternoon of Merida's eighteenth birthday, and all she wanted was to be in the forest, but of course, her mother was fussing over her.

"Merida, stop lazing around! You know well enough that you have to prepare you for your birthday ball tonight." Elinor opened the young girl's wardrobe and shuffled through the dresses on hangers, all coloured to Merida's liking. "You haven't worn this dress in a while..."

"Which one, Mother?" Merida sighed and looked away from the small vanity in her room. Her red hair was as tangled as it normally was, and she was considering a way to hold up her hair. Elinor wanted Merida's hair to be completely pinned back and under a headdress; Merida wanted to leave her own hair as it was.

"Here." Elinor held up a teal dress with a golden neckline and golden thread outlining the ends of the sleeves and the bottom of the dress. Merida cringed at the memory that flooded her mind, back to the ceremony where she ended up shooting for her own hand, ripping every seam that held the tight material together.

"Don't make me wear that again," the redhead groaned. "It was bad enough during the choosing ceremony."

"You should already have a hand, Merida. You're a year overdue. And I'm sure this dress still fits you-you haven't grown or shrunk at all." She held the dress up to her daughter's body, checking to see if any last minute adjustments had to be made.

"Mum, I've changed since last year." And it was true. Most of her had stayed the same, but she gained more of an hourglass shape, her face had matured a little more-it was a bit narrower. Simply put, she looked more like a woman.

"You do have a narrower waist..." The older woman brought her hand near her mouth, tapping away at her chin in thought. "I have the perfect dress for you. Come with me."

Sighing, Merida followed her mother. Inside her parents room, Elinor opened her wardrobe and took out a dress that was undeniably Merida's favourite colour. It was a more formal dress than what she was used to, and although the redhead disliked anything that had to do with formal matters, she made an exception for this particular dress. It was byzantium coloured with a neckline of shimmering old gold with a braided belt to match.

"This is beautiful," Merida said, her voice low. She gingerly took it into her own hands and held it up against her body, the soft velvet tickling her skin as she turned to look at herself in the full-length mirror. Maybe tonight wouldn't be so bad after all. "And you're letting me wear this?"

Elinor nodded. A small smile came onto her face. "I wore it myself when I met your father," she said, "and you can keep it, too, after tonight."

"Are you sure?"

"Aye." She took the dress from Merida's hands and laid it on the bed. Walking behind her daughter who was still standing in front of the mirror, Elinor put her hands on top of Merida's head. "Now, what have we decided on for your hair?"
