Fire and Threat
Helena slept extremely well that night. The morning was just as beautiful and scenic as the morning before. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, or a drop of rain threatening to bring on a thunderstorm. Not yet, anyway.
By eight in the morning, the whole Colosseum thrived and buzzed with students and teachers walking the halls. Helena was accompanied by Cassia and Cato, the three of them headed to the main dining room for breakfast. Once they had gotten there, most of the students were already settled down in their tables which were not much different to a school's cafeteria.
"What's on your schedule?" A voice brought Helena back to reality as she kept thinking of what had happened on the day before.
She exhaled, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that." Her eyes met with Cassia's, whose were laced with excitement and smiled.
"No problem, I was just wondering what you had on your schedule today."
"Oh...well.." Helena dug through her bag for the piece of paper and flattened it out on the table to read, "Well, uh, I have weaponry first period and knife throwing second."
Cassia's face feel almost immediately, "I don't have any of those," She turned to Cato, "You?"
Cato scrunched his lips as an apology, "I have knife throwing second period as well."
..............................................................
"And what do you call this part of the spear?" Mr. Hex pointed to the head. Someone in the back row answered his questions as Helena sunk deeper into her seat. She had known all the parts but she didn't want to draw attention to herself ever since the first day she got here, which she thought was big enough of a hype to last for a whole year.
The class hadn't even reached halfway when a loud gunfire was heard from the amphitheatre. All the students shot from their seats and huddled at the window, trying to get a good look at what had happened. The muttered chattering was loud but Helena couldn't process what any of them were saying, she couldn't even catch one word.
Next minute, Cato busted the classroom door open that Mr. Hex had locked, "HELENA!" He looked around, desperately trying to find her, his eyes scorched a blood red. "HELENA COME HERE NOW." His voice echoed with superiority.
Without any more hesitation, Helena ran straight into his arms. He placed a small kiss on the top of her head, "We need to get you out. Now."
........................................................
This part of the Colosseum, Helena had never seen. It was a winding path covered with vines and hidden away. It was some sort of secret tunnel, she had thought. They soon came to an abrupt stop and Cato spun around to come face to face with her, "Stay here."
"Why?" Helena reached out to him as he started to leave, "Cato!" She caught up to him, "Cato, what's happening out there?"
His eyebrows scrunched together, "Just stay in here okay? Thay won't find you. Alright? Just stay and don't make a sound. Got it?" His eyes were serious. They weren't the pair of caramel honey, joking and loving eyes anymore. They were protective, strong and fiery eyes.
"Okay." She agreed softly, "I'll stay." She then backed away into the small alley and took a seat on the cold concrete floor as she watched Cato run into the crowd of panicking students.
..........................................................
There was something that bugged Cato, like that Helena wouldn't listen to him and run off into some serious danger. He thought that he should've stayed with her to make sure she wouldn't do anything stupid.
He arrived just in time to see the Malum Clan step onto the Arena grounds. The man who led the clan stood sturdy in the front, who also happened to be his step-father.
"Where is the girl!' his voice boomed across the institute. Cato doubted that Helena would've missed it. "Come on little girl! Show up and we won't burn this place down!" Cato knew that his step-father was a man of destruction and a man of his words.
"Fine! You want to play the hard way?" He paused, somewhat still waiting for Helena to walk out. "I'll give you twenty-four hours. If we come back and you're not here to turn yourself in, it'll be a shame to see this place go." With that, he lit the stadium in a ring of fire straight from his fingertips.
Cato, in his nature, decided not only his step-father could get to throw a threat, but he could just as well. Summoning from his eyes, what was once a sunny, heated day turned into a storm-filled sky.
Lucian turned in confusion.
"Lucian!" Cato stepped forward, "Forgetting to greet someone?" His voice strong against the winds.
"Ahh...my favourite son." Lucian spat out, as he walked closer to Cato. "What a lovely surprise. I'm guessing that Lucius is doing well at school too? Looks like you've picked up some tricks."
"You don't deserve to know anything about him." Cato found himself standing up for his brother, hidden somewhere in the crowd. His tone was laced with venom. "That's why he left you for this place." A lightning bolt struck behind his figure.
"Lucian's expression stayed unchanged when he leant closer into Cato's ear, "We'll see about that, my son."
..........................................................
And when the show was over, Coach Helix told everyone to shoot to class or it'll be a Colosseum clean up for everyone. The students piled back into the Halls.
Cato found Helena sitting on the floor when he got back, "Are you alright?" he asked her with an extra softness in his tone which usually never was there. She hadn't looked too relieved.
"I should be asking you that! Did you get hurt?" A swirl of green whirled through her eyes, and then, it was poured down with rain. The pitter-patter of teardrops from the sky echoed along the emptied halls.
"I'm fine, lets get you to class."
