Chapter 2;

Once mom and I got back from school shopping, I went upstairs to put my new stuff away. I hung my clothes up in my closet and put my school supplies in my backpack. Yes, I got a Batman backpack. Why? Batman's freaking legit! Anyways... I looked at the time. 3:00 in the afternoon. I sighed. This Friday, just like every other Friday, was boring. It's not like I could get ahold of some friends and make some plans. Why? I had no friends. I've been a loner pretty much all my life. I had one good friend in the 7th grade, her name was Nevaeh. We were close. Until she became just like the rest, that is. She betrayed me because I wasn't like the rest. Because I didn't fit in. She told me that hanging out with me was ruining her reputation. In our freshman year, Navaeh was head of the cheer leading squad. Which meant insane popularity, since Lakeview is a pretty big school. I'll never forget the time she humiliated me in front of the whole 9th grade body, in the cafeteria...

*FLASHBACK*

"Where is she?" I thought to myself. I was currently looking for Navaeh in the busy lunchroom. After searching halfway through the gigantic cafeteria for my best friend, I finally found her sitting at the table with her cheerleader friends.

"Navaeh!" I called out.

She heard me and looked directly at me, but turned away and continued her conversation with her friend & some of the football jocks.

"Navaeh," I said, approaching her. "Didn't you hear me call your name?" I asked uneasily, considering everyone at that table was staring at me.

"Uhm, excuse me, trying to have a conversation here," one of the cheerleaders said. Lexie, I believe is her name.

"Uhm, excuse me, not talking to you," I shot back. She wants to have an attitude, I can give one right back.

"Sorry, but Lexie's right," Navaeh said. "We are trying to discuss something here."

"You know, ever since you joined the cheer leading team, you've wanted nothing to do with me," I said, getting kind of upset.

"Well could you blame her? Look at you," Lexie interrupted, once again.

"I believe this has nothing to do with you," I snapped. Man, she's nosy.

"Sorry Avery, I just can't be seen with you."

"And why not?"

"Because she doesn't want to," Lexie butted in. I sighed heavily. She was really getting on my nerves.

"I'd appreciate it if you'd shut up for once, this is between me and Navaeh."

"And the rest of us," she calmly said. Lexie and I started going back and forth, until Navaeh exploded.

"Because you ruin my reputation! No one like me wants to be seen with someone like you!" She shouted, gaining the attention of everyone in the cafeteria. I was shocked. That was the first time I've ever seen her explode like that, especially at me.

"I mean, really. Come on. Look at me, and look at you," she said a little bit calmer, pointing at my Rascal Flatts t-shirt. I stared at her in silence for a couple moments.

"Navaeh, I really don't know what's happened to you. Ever since you became head cheerleader, you all of a sudden treat me like trash. You've let this popularity get to your head. It's like cheer leading and popularity are your heroes," I told her, looking straight into her eyes. She then raised her eyebrow and evilly smirked, saying something I never thought I'd hear her say to me.

"At least my heroes aren't dumb hillbilly rednecks."

My heart stopped and my jaw dropped slightly. It was like the world around me stopped. I was heart broken. Navaeh knew how much country music meant to me. It was my escape from everything. She knew that since the day we met.

The loud laughter erupting around me is what brought me out of my trance. I looked around and saw everyone in the cafeteria in hysterics. Some were even literally pounding on the table, some were doubled over, laughing so hard they were crying. Even the football team was chuckling. I looked at Navaeh one last time to see if she had any hint of regret written on her face, only to see her still smirking proudly. I ran out of the cafeteria, pushing people out of my way as I went. Running into the nearest closet with tears streaming down my face, I locked the door behind me. Slowly falling down to the floor with my back pressed against the door, I put my face in my hands and cried for what seemed like hours.

*FLASHBACK ENDING*

As I sat on my bed with that horrible memory still fresh in my mind, I felt tears prickle my eyelids. A single tear escaped, slowly rolling down my face, and I wiped it away. Distracting me from that thought, there was a knock on my door.

"Come in," I said, clearing my throat.

"Hey, dinner's done. I've been calling your name," my mom said, peeking around my door.

"Sorry mom, didn't hear you," I replied.

"Oh, no worries. You okay?" she asked, concern in her voice.

"Yeah, just thinking about school," I lied smoothly with a small smile to seem convincing. My mom seemed to buy it as she dropped the subject, and we continued talking, heading downstairs to eat.
