Tones echoed throughout the fire station. "Station 51, a shooting just occurred on N. Stewart St. between E. King St. and E. 2nd St," the dispatcher informed.
Minutes after, the paramedics arrived at the scene of the shooting and immediately jumped out of the squad. As Roy DeSoto grabbed an armload of medical supplies from the squad, Johnny Gage began to stop the bleeding by applying a tourniquet.
While jogging back to Johnny and the victim he was treating, sudden shots fired out of nowhere. Johnny fell to the ground, holding his chest and screaming in pain.
In shock, Roy instantly stopped in his tracks and nearly dropped the medical supplies he held. Then he quickly ducked behind the squad, and screamed, "Johnny!" Roy glanced around for the shooter. As he did, he saw the police do the same. No shooter was to be seen.
In seconds, Roy had made his decision without hesitation. As he was sprinting past the engine, more shots fired through the air. He stopped for a split second. Then raced to Johnny, but Captain held him back.
"No!" Roy shouted, struggling to break free.
The captain said, "Roy, calm down." Roy was a bit taken back by his composure of the situation.
"Calm down?! I'm not going to just stand by and watch my partner die from a gunshot wound."
"Roy, I can't let you get shot too."
"But Captain, I would give my life for my partner. We do that everyday. And today is no different!"
"We'll get him out of there, but right now isn't the right time. There's a sniper on a building somewhere shooting at us. It isn't going to make matters any better if you get shot too."
Roy sighed, and said, "We're wasting time arguing. What can we do?"
"I'm going to talk to the police. We'll figure something out. Stay here. And that's an order." The captain raced over to the police cars. Roy faintly heard him ask the an officer what to do.
Everything else quickly faded out of focus, as he watched Johnny from about ten feet away. Roy ran his hand through his short, auburn locks of hair, as he sighed again. Just ten measly feet between him and his partner. Nothing would stop him if he just could run to him. Except of course a bullet. Roy felt as if everything would be okay if he could just be by Johnny's side.
It took everything in him not to help Johnny at the moment. He knew the captain was right, but he just couldn't convince himself that there was nothing that could be done. Johnny had been lying still, since taking that bullet. Every second that passed, Roy knew it could be too late for Johnny.
Moments after the captain left, which felt like an eternity to Roy, he sprinted back. He immediately entered the fire engine and moved it horizontally and in front of the seriously injured paramedic. Marco did the same with the squad. Captain gave Roy the nod of approval and Roy immediately raced to Johnny.
It was as if he'd watched a loved one through a window get life-threatening injures. There was no one to give him medical attention. And because of the window blocking he couldn't even be by his side. And now that large, interfering window was finally lifted.
When Roy had approached Johnny, he saw how bad of a condition Johnny was in. He had coughed up blood, his skin was cool and clammy, he was breathing fast and shallow. And he couldn't lay flat, due to a difficulty of breathing.
The sound of bullets hitting the side of the fire trucks was just a small price to pay for the safety of the firefighters. Though bullets kept slicing through the air, Roy ignored them and kept working.
