Jamie sat on the edge of my desk fumbling through some files while I signed off on some documents.
"Hey Nick are you going to the party?" She asked looking over her shoulder at me.
"What party ?"I asked laying down my pen to hand her another stack papers to file.
" the one for the new guy"
" Larry?"
" Yep a couple co-workers thought it would make him feel more welcome to the company."
" That sounds great."
" So see you tonight?"
" Maybe I'll call you."
I'm not sure if I could handle another hangover but since it's for Larry I can at least show my face.
The day went on as usual and for the first time in a long time I was able to leave 2 hours early. packing up my things shutting off my computer putting away files and documents. I was excited to go pick up Nicolette from daycare early. Just as I was getting ready to leave Larry walked through the door
"Going somewhere?" He asked digging through my candy bowl that I had near the door
"Yeah , I'm on my way to go pick up Nicolette. Did you need anything? "
"No I just wanted to come see how my favorite person is doing." He replied smiling
"Well I'm doing fine. Are you excited for tonight? "
"Tonight? "He repeated confused
"You do know you have a party tonight right? It's more like a welcoming party even though you've already been here awhile."
"Oh yeah that. "He says nonchalantly taking hands of candy then stuffing it into his pockets.
"Are you not going or something? You don't sound interested. "I started dialing the daycare number.
"I was going to stay home so I can spend time with you, Nicolette, and leo tonight. I didn't think you would come. "
"Of course I was going to come this is a special night for you. You should at least be like me and show your face last thing you would want is for people to start spreading rumors the people here are petty like that." I laughed "I guess I'll see you there right? "
"Yeah, bye belle tell my daughter I say hi" Larry waved as I started walking away to the elevator "Wait!" he yells running towards me. He gave me a quick friendly hug. I used the quick second to take the sweet smell of his cologne in.
I walked out the door forgetting to lock up my office but it didn't matter that was nothing valuable in there anyway. racing to the daycare. As I approached the door I seen my baby girl's face light up she was already ready backpack on.
"mommy!" She squealed dashing through the door into my arms
" hey baby "I said showering her with many kisses.
"where's Larry "she asked looking around.
"he's still working honey."
" is he coming over I hope so!"Nicolette smiled hard.
" Baby not today he has something to do tonight and you're going over to your auntie house. "
"oh" she frowned
"Hey! Turn that frown upside down little girl it's only for a night. If you're really good I may ask him to let Leo stay over Saturday"
" okay mommy I'll be the goodest sweetest nicest helpfullest girl ever"
"Good. Now let's go to Auntie's house"
Time skip
"Yeah my brother he like work hard." Laurent said trying to put in the good word in for Larry but instead just confused a good handful of people. Larry laughed along with fellow co-workers and appreciated his efforts. Larry reached out the beverages on the waiter's tray. Taking one big gulp of alcohol and he quickly regretted it running as fast as he could to the nearest bathroom located by the stage.
People reminisced and were singing karaoke. Having a nice time drinking problems and stress away.
"Larry!" Jamie placed a hand on Larry's shoulder
"!!!" he turned
"look! "She pointed to one of the higher-ups" I just put in a good word for you. Now they want to meet you"
" Right now? "Larry palms started to sweat
"Nah!Not now tomorrow during your lunch. "
"Ok."relieved he nodded.
"what no thank you? "
"Oh merci Jamie. "
"I need to go tell Nicole & laurent !"
Nicole pov.
Why is he staring at me. No matter where I go or how many people are between us I could still feel it. Without a single doubt Larry is staring at me. Is it this dress? Does it look to slutty or my heels too tall. Maybe my hair, I didn't spend much time on it. My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a spoon tapping on glass somewhere everyone looked towards the source of the sound.
" If I may have your attention ladies and gentlemen I would like to say congratulations to Larry Bourgeois on being our newest -"
mentally I block out Jamie's words and look for the nearest bar . Then back over to the stage. She had handed him the mic. While Larry spoke I got a refill.The music started back up . meaning his speech was over if he had one ."
Jamie threw her arm over my shoulder "Nicole are you having a good time?"
" Yeah it's alright but I'm going to be leaving soon"
" Nooo-ooo" she whined
" I have work in the morning. I gotta go pick up Nicolette from my sister's house and then prepare for a meeting"
" ugh! Work you need to relax .Go finish this drink then come dance with me "she shoved a drink into my hand
" but -"
"but but nothing"Jamie shushed me quickly and guided me to the booths.
I sat in the booth near the corner sipping the strong drink Jamie gave me while watching other people dance. It's always seems so weird to see fellow co-workers dress casual it's like seeing a teacher outside of school or your boss at the beach.
"Want to dance?" I looked up to see Larry smiling like he always does
"I'm not a really good dancer" I replied
he took my drink from my hand and placed it on the table" I'll teach you babygirl"
"... Okay "he led me to the middle of the Dance Floor.
I could feel everyone looking I swear on us and a nervous feeling started to build in my stomach I'm known as the workaholic not the party girl so I'm definitely out of my element "Nicole "he whispered "don't worry about them follow me"
We've started moving slow rhythmically to the music after a few minutes I started to get more comfortable the room seemed to stop and it was just me and Larry .We pressed our bodies against each other feeling the music flow through us.
"see you're great "
"Thank you. I wouldn't normally dance"I said resting my head on his shoulder
" No problem babe. you and I should go out more "
"huh??"
"What?" He act like he didn't say what he said the song finished. Everyone started to clap and whistle .I ducked my head into my hands trying to hide my embarrassment Larry placed his hand on my hip in lightly guided me back to the booth where we shared more drinks. about
"Hey look Nicole I have been thinking a lot about us"
"Us?"
