Chapter Ten
[Tom]
“Tom, I’m so scared.” Joey whispered. We were sitting on a bench outside of some lawyer’s office for the court case between his mom and her ex.
“It’s going to be okay, Joey.” I said.
“That doesn’t make me any less scared.”
“I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
The door opened and Molly walked out. Joey’s mom also stepped out. She looked so tired, so stressed. I looked at Joey and saw that he had the same expression she did. My poor baby…
“Joey, come in.” She said. “Tom, watch Molly, please.”
“I will.” I said, giving Joey’s hand a squeeze. He squeezed mine back and went into the room.
I watched the door gently close and felt like I was disconnected from Joey permanently. I don’t know why. I know he’ll be out soon. I know we’ll going to go back to his house later and we’ll cuddle and kiss until late tonight. But I know how stressed he is. After today, my Joey will change.
“I’m sorry.” Molly said, making me jump. I hadn’t realized she had sat down next to me.
“What?” I asked.
“You’re worried because my mommy and Joey are worried because of my daddy. I have to say sorry because my daddy won’t.”
“Who told you that?”
“I did.”
“You don’t have to apologize for something that you parent has done.”
“I’ve heard you apologize for something your mommy said.” She said, her big grey eyes staring at me.
Damn. “Yeah, well, I’m a hypocrite.”
“What’s that?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
“Okay. Tom?”
“Yeah?”
“Joey told me that I had to decide whether being gay was a bad thing or not. I’ve decided.”
“What have you decided?” I asked.
“I think that a lot of people aren’t thinking about it. I think they’re thinking wrong.” She said softly.
I looked at her. What could she mean? “What do you mean they’re thinking about it wrong?”
“I mean, if they were thinking about it right, they’d see that they’re all being stupid.”
“How?”
“When I see you and Joey…Joey looks at you like he looks at ice cream. Like he wants you like you make him happy. And you look at him with a fire in your eyes.”
“Fire in my eyes? Where did you come up with that?”
“I took one of my mommy’s books.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Tom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you love my brother?”
I blushed. “Um, I, uh. Yes, I do.” I blushed deeper. I just admitted it. Fuck.
“I think Joey loves you too. And if you two love each other, why shouldn’t you be allowed to be together?” She asked innocently.
