Chapter Thirteen
[Joey]
“I’m home!” I yelled, running into my apartment. “Molly, you goober head, where are you? Mommy! Tommy brought me home!”
“Joey!” Molly screamed, jumping into my arms.
I winced. “It still hurts a little, Molly.”
“Sorry!”
“Joey!” My mom yelled, wrapping me into a hug.
I looked at everyone: My mom smiling, my sister with glee in her eyes, my wondrous boyfriend with a goofy grin, the weird stranger in the corner…Wait, what?
“Mom?” I asked, outing Molly down.
“Uh,” She said, following my gaze to the man. “Tom, why don’t you take Molly to her room, then you may come out when Joey says it’s okay.”
“Okay.” Tom said, furrowing his eyebrows.
I studied the man who was smiling at me. He was tall, pale and slim, with red hair and brown eyes. Tom took Molly into her room, and my mom smiled at me.
“Joey, this is your dad.” She said.
My jaw dropped. He smiled at me. “Hi, Joey. Long time no see.”
“More like never see.” I muttered.
“Joey, don’t start. Hear Dylan out.” My mom said.
“You named me after him?” I yelled.
She rolled her eyes and walked out. Man.
“Joey, I have seen you before.” He said. “I was there when you were born.”
“What?” I asked. “My mom always said you left before—”
“Before you were born. No. It was after you were born. This is going to sound really awful.”
“What is?”
He looked me straight in the eyes. “Why I left.”
“Go on.”
“I was with Kali because I honestly thought I loved her. I really did. But, Joey, sometimes, you just know who you’re supposed to be with, and who you’re not.”
I looked at him. “You ditched my mom because?”
“Because I wasn’t meant to be with her. I am meant to be with who I am with.”
“Who’s the hoe?”
“My partner, Zack.”
My jaw dropped once more. “What?”
He smiled nervously. “I’m gay, like you.”
“What?”
“I explained it to your mom, and then she found out she was pregnant. I stayed with her until after you were born, then we divorced, and I met Zack. Joey, I swear, I never meant to hurt you. She explained what a hole that has been left in your life. I’m sorry.”
I looked at the man. He meant every word. “You’re really gay?”
“Yeah.” He smiled. “And I’ve also heard all the shit you go through. I have to deal with it too.”
I smirked. “You don’t know the half of it.”
“Tell me. I’m going to be there for my son.” He said.
Then I explained everything.
All the stuff at school, the Chester thing, the trouble with Tom’s mom. All of it. And he listened. We started to get to know each other. And it was great.
