A/n: Hey guys, this is my first story, so please no hate, I hope you enjoy!
As long as we're together.
Those were the five words Jake said to her for a second time, just a few days before leaving her. People always said that they were too close, so the first few days, she'd hoped and prayed that he'd come to his senses and come back to her. Maybe he just needed his space, she thought.
She told herself that even when she saw him in school, joking with friends, while she sat all alone.
She and Jake had always been together. It had gotten to the point where their families didn't even call for them separately. Instead of calling for Jake to come meet them, and then her, Katrina, they'd always called for Jake and Katrina, together. Oh, what she wouldn't give for things to be like that again.
That's why she couldn't believe it when he left her behind. They'd been together since preschool, best friends since the day they met. Nobody could believe that he'd just throw it all away, for a girl.
Her name was Jordan and she was absolutely gorgeous. Jake has always compared her beauty to Jordan's when she felt insecure. Jake had loved Jordan since the second grade, when she'd first moved to their sleepy little town called River Run.
He'd broken her poor little heart when he first told her about his little crush on Jordan, the day afterward. She'd loved him forever and she knew that she couldn't stop now, no matter how hard she tries, even if he liked another girl. She'd told herself it would pass, that Jake would forget about her and things would go back to normal.
Things never did. It started with Jake asking Jordan to sit with them at lunch. And they'd become the three musketeers quicker than you could snap your fingers. Jake promised that his and her friendship wouldn't change and he kept that promise, for years. But, now it appeared that he was finally sick of her.
It started when Jordan became a cheerleader, at the start of junior year. Jake had been so proud, she had been too, she'd even helped throw Jordan a party. At the party, everything was ruined. Jake asked Jordan out and of course, they kissed in front of everyone, including their best friend, little Katrina. Jake had promised once again, that nothing would change, this time though, he lied. Each week, Jake forgot more and more about her; about their movie nights, hang outs, football games, everything important to their friendship. Until one day, he forgot her birthday, the most important day in their friendship. They had met on her birthday! He went on an all-day date with Jordan.
She and Jake had an enormous fight and he said, 'Maybe I should just leave.' She had answered, 'Maybe you should.' She'd regretted saying it every day since. She hadn't realized yet that leaving was forever. Now she knew.
Every day since, she'd written to him, in her journal. Everyday since she'd told him how much she missed him. Every day since, she'd told him how she felt about him and about them.
Then, one day, far in the future, she stopped writing. She realized now that she didn't need him anymore. Until he showed up at her door, past midnight, and her feelings resurfaced. She discovered she loved him even more for teaching her that people leave, and you MUST let them go. So that's what she did, she let her best friend and her first love go. And they were both better off because of it.
