I rubbed my eyes in shock.
I immediately recognized Tommy's signature red Power Ranger jacket. Beside me, Bradley quickly spun around to get a better look.
Tommy couldn’t quite place where my voice was coming from so I came up from behind him and gave him a huge bear hug.
Boy, did I miss him. A lot.
Tommy turned around and looked up, meeting my gaze. He gave me the cheekiest grin and then said, “Eww, Anesha. Don’t slobber all over me now. I’m with my peeps.” He quickly glanced at his friend.
I laughed and it never felt so good to know he was up to his old tricks again. But I just hugged him more tightly until eventually Bradley came up from behind me.
“So, this is the fella I should be scared of?” He said, smiling.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Bradley,” he stuck out his right hand.
“Tommy Cantino in the house, homey,” Tommy replied and then proceeded to fist bump Bradley’s shoulder.
“Ow! You sure have a mean hook there, homey,” Bradley echoed, fooling around with Tommy.
And of course Justine had to appear too. Great. Just great.
“Oh, and Tommy. This is my friend Justine, she’s from my new school too,” I said, before he could ask.
“Oh, he’s from your umm…,” Justine pretended to be polite by not mentioning the word shelter.
“Yeah, I’m from the shelter too. That’s where we thick skins are from,” Tommy said, smirking. I knew he’d say that and I was actually pleased he did.
“I’m just here with Luke. You remember Luke right, Anesha? We went to Space Land together,” he continued. How could I forget? That Luke kid vomited all over Greg’s car after having too many rides on the ‘Whiz Master’.
“Yeah, I do. Hi Luke, how are you doing? Everything good in school?” I asked, as a measure of courtesy.
“Good,” he nodded and headed back into his mum’s car. But he was never one for words anyway.
“Well, I guess you should go. It’s a school night, you should be in bed, huh?” I said, messing with his soft brown hair.
“Mhmm…Hey, is that a Mercedes GP logo pin? That’s cool man! Schumacher all the way!” Tommy excitedly announced, pointing at Bradley’s pin on logo.
“Yeah, you into F1, chump?” Bradley asked Tommy.
“You bet! But I wish Button wouldn’t win all the time. I’m sick of that white guy,” he said. Bradley broke into a deep chuckle.
“Well, you know what?” Bradley said, removing his pin, “You…can have this.” He held up the gleaming badge.
“Wait, you sure?” I asked, not wanting Bradley to regret his decision.
“Yeah, anything for a fellow Schumacher shipper. It’ll look great on that jacket of yours,” Bradley winked at Tommy.
“Aw, thanks man!!!! I owe you big time, brother!” Tommy said, full of glee and excitement in his eyes.
“Okay, off you go now,” I said, before giving him one last squeeze. Tommy opened the back door but before he got in, he yelled, “He’s a keeper, Nesh!” and slammed the door. I could almost hear him showing off his newfound badge to Luke in the car.
“Nesh, huh?” Bradley raised a quizzical brow at me, his mouth in the shape of a crooked grin. By this time, Justine had already gotten into the car with Tyler.
