I sat by the window on the plane. I've never been on a plane before. we never really had any reason to move. Before now. What does dad even plan on doing? Stopping by their house? Even I know that would end badly.
"I'm sorry you had to leave your friends," Dad said nodding at me.
I shrugged. "It's okay. I can make new ones."
"So I was thinking once we got there I'd give you a day or two to settle in. Get you enrolled in school.."
"Okay."
"The options are limited, of course. Its a small city."
"And my options are..?"
Dad chuckled. "Carlton or Buckner Hall."
"Isn't Carlton for..?"
Dad nodded. "Deaf kids."
I frowned. "I'm not deaf."
Dad laughed. "Okay then. Buckner?"
"Do I even have a choice?"
Dad reached over and hugged me.

We landed in Kansas City the next night. I was sleeping and dad shook me awake. "Des."
I yawned opening my eyes. "What?" I asked drowsily.
Dad chuckled. "Its time to wake up, sweetheart."
I blinked looking around. People were walking down the aisles with their luggage a trying to get out. I stretched sitting up straight. "Were here?"
Dad nodded smiling. "In Kansas."

I watched dad as he talked to some airport guy. I couldn't hear them from over here but they seemed to be coming to some sort of agreement. The guy nodded and dad smiled looking relieved as he walked over to me.
"Okay, come on," Dad said pulling a suitcase along. "Our things were already dropped off at the apartment."
"How?"
Dad chuckled. "I got some help with old friends. Come on sweetie, you look exhausted."
I fought back a yawn. " I am exhausted."
Dad grinned wrapping an arm around me. "Come on."

The apartment was just a little run down but dad said it was just temporary. There was a studio for me to make music and it had a nice kitchen. There were three bedrooms.
"Once we settle in and stay a few days it'll start to feel like home," dad said.
I nodded opening one of the bedroom doors. a single bed lay there with two suitcases. Dad chuckled touching my shoulder. "This is my room, yours is a door down."
"Oh, okay." Dad closed the door as he stood there watching me go to the next door. I opened it.
The walls were beige and a purple bed was in there. My guitar was propped against my bed. There was a dresser and three suitcases were stacked neatly next to it.
"What do you think?" Dad asked from behind me.
I turned around smiling at him. "It's okay. Thank you."
"You could repaint it," dad suggested. "Or buy some wallpaper."
"Okay." I looked down at my phone. It was one in the morning. I sighed. "Can I sleep?"
"Of course, honey." Dad squeezed my shoulder. "We'll go out for breakfast."
"Okay."
Dad smiled and turned around walking into his room. I closed my door an yawned throwing myself onto the bed.
