Kitten : First,congratulations ! You have taken the first precautions of making sure your OC is not a Mary Sue by reading this book.Now,onto a few tips.
Tip 1)Research. I cannot tell you how many times I am infuriated when reading about Mary Sues/Gary Stues that have no connection to the show that he/she is in.
(A good example is Hetalia.I have seen some OC's which are great,like China's little sister Beijing which is an OC of a friend of mine. But some like this ?!*See Below )
An OC of someone which I shall not name is supposedly the sister of Russia and she is her own country.But somehow her native language is a mix of German and Russian. The Fudge ?! And her nationality is German/Russian. Girl,you are your own country ! Please explain why you look like a photoshopped Fem!Germany wearing Russian clothes !?
Tip 2) Please give your OC some flaws.Now,I know this sounds ridiculous.Who doesn't like a perfect person ? But giving your OC some flaws will make him/her more believable as a character.
Tip 3) Try not to be too flamboyant.Standing out is great and refreshes the reader and makes your OC more interesting.But having your OC have pink hair,neko ears and neon blue eyes ? *Facepalm*
Tip 4)Try to accept constructive criticism.I know having someone judge your OC is harsh and you may feel angry,but try to accept CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.
Now,if you see something like :'Oh My Gawd your OC sucks and lame !' Just...just ignore.
But if it's something like :'Your OC is ok but she seems to be too fancy.She is a commoner but yet lives in a mansion for no reason ? That's a bit of a loophole.' Try to improve using the criticism the reader gave you.
