Part 14: Mordecai Goes Off To College

It had been years and the beatings along with the drugs were destroying my relationship with Zach. I couldn't take it anymore, I just wanted to leave but where would I go. I had not spoken to my friends in ages and I thought it would be rude calling them just to ask for favors. I tried looking for a job but no one would hire me because of the scars and bruises on my skin and I could not rent an apartment cause I had no money of my own. Almost everything I owned was from Zach's money and so I decided to stay and deal with whatever I was going through as I had no one to turn to. I assumed Josh was still with his new lover and I had never completely gotten over him so I couldn't run back to him. I could not recall the last time I saw my son and the fact that I couldn't was heartbreaking.

One evening as I was watching television, the house phone began to ring so I ran over to see who it was. Surprisingly it was Mordecai and I was overjoyed to hear his voice in so long.

"Hey mum, what's going on? It's been quite a while since you've called."

"Oh honey, uhmn I've been a bit busy these days and stuff but I really wanted to give you a call."

"You sure everything's alright mum? You don't sound too good."

"Yeah I just have a little flu, that's all. You've got nothing to worry about."

"Mum, I know when you're lying. I saw you sometime this week with him. I saw how afraid you were and I saw what he did to you mum. You need to leave him or he will end up killing you. I've never seen you look like that in my life and it terrifies me. Please mum, if you want you can come stay with dad and I."

"No, I can't come back to live with you sweedy and don't tell your father about this please. Just keep this between us and don't worry about me. I'll be fine."

"But mum.."

"No buts. Just trust me please."

"Okay mum. I just don't want anything to happen to you. You don't deserve that kind of treatment. You're better than that and you know it. But what I really called for was to tell you that am going off to college next week and I want you to be there to wish me goodbye."

"I'll be there I promise. I won't miss it for anything."

"Good cause I would be disappointed if you did. I gotta go mum. I'll talk to you soon bye."

"Bye honey, I love you."

"I love you to mum," and the phone hung up. I felt so proud of him for wanting to go to college and I was glad that he would be able yo have a better life than I ever had but it concerned me that he was worried about me. That evening when Zach came home I told him that I had to go wish Zach off to college and he said he would let me go but he had to come to make sure I was telling the truth. He said that I could not stay long and that I could only be there for a few minutes and it bothered me that I could not be around my family much.
