Breaking

I clenched my jaw tighter and shut my eyes to numb the pain. I had somehow fallen out of Edgeworth's grip for a moment and then been picked up again by him seconds later. His grip had seemed more... Rough after he'd picked me up. I had grazed my cheek and was not appreciating the shaky ride. I was being used as some sort of barge, being shoved into people to knock them out of the way as I cried. What had come over me whilst we were acting? I was overcome with a giant fury which ended up almost getting me killed! I grunted as I continued to cry. Edgeworth saved me... I was in his debt... Again. Eventually, we reached the door of what appeared to be my office. "Key." Edgeworth growled as I shakily nodded and gave it to him. He ignored the crowd which had seemed to be considerably smaller who were still following us. He locked the door tightly but didn't hand me back the key. I was too fatigued to argue. "Could you... Let me down now...?" I croaked, my head spinning. "Sure, sure.." He replied with a gravelly voice as he dropped me onto the wooden floor where he stood. I groaned with agony as my body slammed onto it; "Nngh... Edgeworth...?" I was too weak to stand, so I used the last of my strength to turn over onto my back and stare up at him. I hissed with pain as he stood over me triumphantly.

I couldn't check his eye colour from below, nor could I see any other large characteristic feature from below him, so I assumed it was truly Edgeworth.

"W-why are you doing this... To me...?" I moaned quietly. "Huh?" He smirked, cocking his head as he looked down at me; "I don't understand."
"You're acting... Weird lately..." I kept panting and sweating as I struggled to speak. "I don't agree. I'm being normal.." He frowned at me. I half believed Edgeworth when he said that man the night before who forcefully kissed me wasn't him, but too much doubt still clouded my mind. "Y-you... Forced me to kiss you the other n-night and now... Y-you're kicking me around..."
"I haven't kicked you once!" He sighed as I winced; "Perhaps you meant that metaphorically?"
"Y-yes..." My eyes flitted away from his.
"Oh. PERHAPS I have my reasons."
"I-"
"MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!" He shouted at me loudly this time. I shrank back; "Sor-"
"Forget it! You ungrateful little..." He bent down and sharply slapped me on my cheek which was grazed. I cried out in pain, but was too weak to fight back. I choked as he spat venomous, angry words at me one after one. "YOU WERE A MISTAKE, PHOENIX WRIGHT!" As he shouted, I tried to get a word in but it was impossible. After a little while, he stopped and paced to the kitchen, leaving me lying on the floor helplessly.

I fought with myself, trying to stand up with no merit. It was hopeless. He came rushing back in, clutching a large knife in his hand. He smiled insanely, sending a chill up my spine.

'Where have I seen that insane smile before...?'

I licked my dry lips as he advanced towards me. "I'm going to end your pitiful life, Phoenix Wright!" He snarled as he brought the knife to my chest, resting it on top of me, one move away from killing me. I sweated and began to take shallow breaths. "Edgeworth... Please...! Don't do it!" I closed my eyes tightly, feeling sick. "You should've been guilty in that trial I defended you in! I regret what I did! But NOW... NOW I'll get my REVENGE on you!"
"R-revenge...?!" I cried out weakly; "What have I ever done to you...?!"
"I gave you my everything and you just give me mistrust!"
"Edgeworth...! I'm so sorry! I trust you, I do! It's just, the other night..." I began to cry, the heaviness of the knife weighing me down. "I SEE HOW IT IS! Just because I have a KNIFE we act all apologetic, do we?! Well I've had ENOUGH!" He raised the knife, about to plunge it into me. I winced, too scared to move. Suddenly, as if my guardian angel was around, there was a knock at the door. Edgeworth grimaced and turned to go to it; "Don't you dare move." I nodded, silently praying for my safety. "Ughh..." He peered out the window and swiftly unlocked the door, suddenly dashing outside as soon as he opened it. "Agh! Was that you, Phoenix?!" A distinct, familiar call sounded. Edgeworth walked back in, as calm and composed as ever - well, maybe not CALM...

More... Panicky.

He turned to see me strewn on the floor, a knife lying dismally on my chest. "PHOENIX?!" He rushed over to my side, sweating bullets. "Nngh... Edgeworth..." I stared up at him blankly.

'What's up with HIM?! He was threatening to kill me a second ago!'

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Are you HURT?! Why have you got a KNIFE on your chest?! WERE YOU ATTEMPTING SUICIDE?!" He seemed to be having a heart attack as he kneeled beside me, on the verge of tears. "PHOENIX! You have so much to live for! You're only young!" He held me close as I whimpered, pulling me gently into his arms. "Ugh... Edgeworth...?" He grabbed the knife;
"One moment." He let me down again softly and inspected the knife; "Thank goodness I caught you before you did it!" He raised his eyebrows and sprinted to the kitchen. I heard some sort of clattering before he came back to my side and cradled me in his arms again. I went limp and watched him in confusion. "Edgeworth...?!" I moaned quietly; "Huh...? Oh! Yes?!"
"What's going on with you...?!" I gingerly sat myself up, finally regaining some strength. "N-nothing...?" He brushed his hand against my cheek and noticed me wince. "PHOENIX?! What happened?! Your cheek is bright red and... You... You grazed it?! W-with the knife?!" He widened his eyes in horror; "Phoenix... Please don't try to kill yourself! I can't live without you..." He murmured, pecking me lightly on the cheek as I numbly tried to respond. "Edgeworth.. I wasn't trying to... Commit suicide..." I groaned.
"Then... What are the marks and why did you have a knife on your chest?!"
"Y-you..." I looked away. My stomach was churning and I didn't want to say anything.

'What if there really ARE two Edgeworths? I shouldn't tell him what happened or... He'll... He'll hunt them down...'

I groaned as he persisted; "Phoenix. Tell me what's wrong!"
