Leslie’s POV
“Do you have any idea how dangerous what you did was?” I turned around to see my mom, hands on her hips staring at me with anger burning in her eyes. “Ryder is a very nice young man, thank God for that. But if he wasn’t you could have been seriously hurt just wandering down the highway in the middle of the night. Nothing good ever happens after 2 in the morning” She looked tired and much older than 32. I just stared back and said flatly,
“At least I got us here. We weren’t getting anywhere with that hunk of sh-” I looked over at Sami who was staring at me intently. “Junk.” I finished. Mom just looked at me and muttered something about going to bed. I sighed and sat down. Sami hopped up onto my lap.
“So kiddo, you want to help me unpack while mom sleeps.” She nodded vigorously, she loved surprising mom. We started to work, starting with Sami’s boxes. We unpacked her half of the room which was really more like three-quarters but I didn’t complain. It took a little longer than it should have due to the fact that everything had to be exactly where she wanted.
My half came second and only took a good half an hour because of my lack of personal items. While my half was totally bare, Sami’s walls were covered in photos of her and her friends. Sitting on her nightstand was her digital camera and printer. For 6 years old she loved documenting every second of her life and had gotten the camera from my mom and the printer from me. She valued those things more than her own life. About halfway through the kitchen I found her asleep leaning into a box of towels for the closet. I picked her up and brought her to bed. After I finished with the kitchen and other miscellaneous objects there was one box with no designated room written on it. I opened it and smiled. Sitting there all shiny and looking brand-new was Ryder’s coffee maker. I smiled and pulled it out with coffee beans, grinder, multiple syrups, and matching espresso cups. There was a note sitting on top giving me instructions on how to make a cinnamon dolce latte. I set it up and set to work, the steamed milk overflowed the first time but I got it right the second time and tasted the effort I had put into the drink. I washed my cup and put it with the coffee maker. I was exhausted and put myself to bed.
The next morning was pretty rushed as mom had to bus to work and I had to drop off Sami and get myself to school. I have to admit I was pretty nervous about going to a new school again. I figured I wouldn’t have any friends but I wished all the best to Sami as she headed into her new school. We were halfway through the school year and Sami was still in the first grade. I hoped she would make friends because school really sucks unless you have friends. Or you enjoyed it. I had neither but didn’t complain because I had kick-ass grades. I walked in the school doors and walked to the office where a bored looking secretary handed me my schedule and told me where my first class was. I got to the classroom and knocked on the door. I heard a loud voice telling me to enter. I walked in and was taken aback at the number of students there. The class was held in a theatre of sorts. There were several tables scattered on risers with 3 sets of stairs on the right left and middle of the room.
“Ah, Miss Pearson, so glad you could make it to class and on time. Please take a seat next to Mr. Langley. Jason please get your things off of Miss Pearson’s chair.” I looked over to see a really attractive guy wearing a letter jacket moving his things to the floor next to him and giving me a wink when he caught my eye. I walked over to him and pulled out my history notebook and prepared to take notes as he called attendance. I jumped as I heard a quiet voice whisper in my ear,
“Hi, I’m Jason. What’s your name hot stuff?” I rolled my eyes and looked at him sizing him up. Not my type.
“Pearson.” I waited for my name to be called. He got closer, I got further.
“No, I mean your first name.” His lips were practically on my ear. I jumped and he laughed. I turned to him,
“Save yourself the trouble, I’ll be gone before the end of the year. I’m not worth your time.” I looked him up and down. “And you’ll be a waste of mine.” He looked surprised. I expected him to piss off but instead he got closer. “Will you go away, please?” I saw him smile.
“Mr. Langley will you please detach yourself from Miss Pearson’s side. She doesn’t need to get that acquainted with you. And raise your hand when I call your name as well.” Jason raised his hand and moved back a bit but got close again and started trailing his hand down my arm. I had enough of this.
“If I throw a stick will you leave?” I pulled away. Did he get off by making me uncomfortable?
“Miss Pearson?” I raised my hand hoping to distract Jason from me. He sat back for a bit because Mr. C was staring at him challenging him to do something while he watched. Unfortunately he resumed attendance and Jason started staring at me again. He slowly leaned closer and I leaned further to the point of falling out of my chair. Jason grabbed my hand and pulled me up holding my hand some more. He leaned closer, “You’re very sexy, did you know that Pearson?” I decided to just ignore him. I stared at a mark on the drywall as he continued to whisper in my ear.
“Mr. Smith? Ryder Smith” I turned my head just as the door flew in and a sexy mop of dark brown hair rushed into my view as Ryder booked it into the classroom apologizing for being late. Caught up in seeing him it took me by complete surprise when Jason licked my ear. I reflexively brought my hand back and plowed my fist into his face.
