My arms ache from holding up the gun and my eyes ache from trying to focus on the target. When Thomas announces we should call it a night I throw the gun aside and fall back on the cold concrete floor.
“Finally I can’t take another shot or I think my arms will come off.” I say exasperated.
Thomas chuckles and crouches down next to me. “Okay, I'll take the first shift.”
I sit up shocked. “Shift?” I bite my lip.
“Yeah, I don’t know about you but I don’t want to wake up with our arms eaten off by a zombie.” He says with a smirk.
“ Oh, Ha, Ha.” I frown, as much as he’s right all I wanted to do was sleep, and maybe not ever wake up.
“Where are we sleeping?” I sigh.
The smile vanishes from his face and he scratches his head.
“I guess the car, we can lock it and stay low, unless you want to sleep with brain breath out there.” He says half joking.
“I’ll pass on sleep overs with dead monsters thanks.” I shudder thinking about it.
We get blankets and pillows from the camping section of the store and Thomas gathers two of every type of weapon. I grab a water proof watch from one of the shelves. I stare at the time.
Six hours ago, I bashed my moms skull in with a baseball bat.
It feels like a million years since we fought. The last thing I said to my mother was that I hated her. She cried, the last human thing a saw about her, was the puffy eyes and the tears still wet on her cheek.
I stare at the watch. Anger wells up in me. Why am I so horrible? How could I be so cruel to her?
“Hurry up slow poke lets get out of here.” Thomas yells back at me. Slowly I turn around ad walk toward the door, careful to not look at the zombie carcass on the ground. I get comfortable in the passengers seat of Thomas's red truck.
"You are my stars, you are my moon, you are the sky and the sun, from the day you were born, from the moment I looked into your beautiful eyes, almost the same, but better than mine, I loved you, my whole world was you.”
As a kid I didn’t understand, all I knew was I loved my dads voice, although he hated it, I always thought he could beat everyone who ever went in American idol.
“I like that song who wrote it?”
“Us”
“But I never wrote that song!”
My dads laugh was so light so happy
“You are that song, your brown eyes and hair, your mothers face and smile and laugh, your voice. You are me song.”
My seven year old heart filled with joy and love
“Oh daddy, I-”
“Wake up sleepy head!” Thomas’s voice rang in my ears.
I moan and turn over and yawn, and hit my head on the car door, then I realize where I am and who I’m with and it up quickly. I sigh and sit back.
“Sorry it wasn’t all a bad dream.” Thomas sighed and tilted his head. I look out the window and realize where not in the gun store parking lot anymore.
“Where are we?” I ask looking around.
“Not sure,” Thomas shrugs looking at his GPS, “some gas station in between Glen Ellen and Tomales.”
“Wait! There will be a zombie in there!” I said sitting up straight. Looking around expecting a zombie to attack any minute.
“Yeah, I woke you up so you don’t wake up with me eaten by a zombie.” Thomas laughs at my horrified face.
“Thats not funny!” I screech. Fear and anger flooding my face.
“Okay, sorry, I just thought we needed some food, and maybe a hair brush because you look awful.”
I turn red and look in the review mirror, my brown hair seems to be sticking straight up.
I look at my waterproof watch, 10:26 A.M., my stomach growls and I moan.
“Okay lets go.”
