Gerard sat in the back of his classroom, only half listening to the lesson being presented. He peaked up at the front of the room from time to time, but it was never to look at the teacher.
Gerard always looked at the boy that sat right in front of the classroom. The boy with shaggy, raven black hair that he always shook his fingers through. The boy that Gerard always stole glances at so he knew exactly how to sketch him.
Not that Gerard sketched that boy too often.
Only every other page in his worn notebook.
"Alright, kiddos!" The teacher called everyone's attention to the front of the class, "Announcement before the school day ends! Mrs. Weekes, the school's art teacher, is hosting a small gallery of student works. If you would like to submit something, bring it in before next Friday."
Gerard perked up at the teacher's words. He loved art. This sounded like just the thing for him.
"Frank, dude, you should put in some of those freaky deaky things you draw." A boy with spiked black hair grinned, nudging the boy of Gerard's affection.
Frank laughed lightly, shaking his head. "Not positive how much of it is school appropriate."
Gerard looked down at his latest drawing. It was just space doodles with: a planet, some stars, and a satellite. Even though his scribbles were meticulous in detail and structure, he saw nothing gallery worthy in it.
A hand shot up in the air in front of Gerard, drawing his attention away from his perfected scribbles.
"Mr. Urie, is there a theme we need to follow?" A soft, squeaking voice asked.
The teacher laughed. "No, Melanie. Just a self expression kind of thing."
"Rad." Frank grinned with a spark of inspiration behind his eye.
Gerard felt his heart flutter before he looked down. Frank's eyes were something stunning to Gerard... Although he had never looked into them straight on...
"Hey, Gee."
Gerard looked over at his short, fedora topped friend. Patrick nodded at Gerard's notebook. "Are you going to submit anything?" He asked.
"I don't know..." Gerard shrugged, "Don't know if doodles are good enough."
"Even your doodles are amazing, though." Patrick scoffed as the bell rang, signifying the end of the school day.
Gerard closed his notebook, shrugging at Patrick's statement. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose..." He trailed off, watching Frank walk out of the classroom with laugher.
Patrick rolled his eyes, gathering his own things. Gerard didn't pay attention to him. He was thinking over what he could possibly enter into the student art gallery. He had notebooks full of different styles and drawings, but he was unsure what would be best...
He left the classroom with Patrick, bidding him farewell once they reached the front of the school building. Patrick left for the bus pickup area while Gerard began walking in the direction of his house.
What could he enter that would really impress people... People, totally not just meaning Frank. Although, Frank would be a nice person to impress.
Gerard sighed. How could he impress someone like that? It was a stupid idea to even consider... He should be focused on perfecting whatever thing he would eventually decide to submit.
---
It was nearly the deadline for the gallery submissions, but Gerard had nothing. Whenever he thought he had the perfect idea, he could never perfect it. The lines always came out jagged, or his shading would always break through the outlined barrier.
