I remember when my dad was alive how sad he was. No one would say anything to him about how depressed he seemed, not even me.
He lacked the joy that a mate would bring you, and even though he never confirmed it with me, I always knew that my mother wasn't his mate.
If she was my dad's mate, why did they barely speak to one another? I was always so confused. He was the one who taught me that my mate will be the most important person to me in the world, and I just never understood how he knew anything about mates if he didn't even have one. Sometimes I would wonder if he was planning on leaving my mother if he found one. I found out too late that his mate died.
An Alpha needs their mate to rule the pack is an old, unspoken rule. But I didn't really understand why until years of my dad, the strongest man that I knew, broke down into my arms and begged for me to kill him. I know what it's like to feel responsible for a loved one's death. I know my father's pain, in a way because I believe I killed my father. My birth broke his spirit to the extent that he couldn't bare to live any longer. He told me loved me, and maybe that was true, but I still hurt him.
I sat down on the bench outside of the pack house soaking in the warm sunlight. I've always enjoyed solitude and isolation, some of the best ideas for my pack began when I was sitting alone on this bench. We did a few renovations to the pack house, though. I created a statue of my father and I, standing side by side with smirks on our faces.
The granite version of him isn't an exact replica of him, but it's good enough and it's a way that I can show respect to him, besides putting flowers on his grave.
I sigh and comb my fingers through my hair, standing up and walking back inside the pack house.
"Alpha Nathan, have you come to a conclusion? How are we planning the alliance with the Argento pack?" My first beta Mason asks me. His brown hair falling against his face.
"Well, we can arrange a meeting to discuss the options. But we could always offer them a share of our land as a peace offering."
Mason nods his head excitedly and runs to his office. Mason has autism, and he's a very amazing guy. He's one of the most efficient and skilled workers that I have. I trust him with my life and he's very good at everything that he puts his mind to, including fighting. I've trained him very well with the same techniques as my father. He picks things up easily and he's very intelligent. A lot of people think that people with autism are stupid and unintelligent but that just isn't the case. It's harder for them to express what they're thinking and feeling in the same way that we do, that's pretty much it.
When Mason is angry he'll script, repeat word to word what he's heard on movies and television shows. He'll pretend he's the hulk; which can surprisingly be very helpful, especially when we're trying to intimidate rogues away from our lands. But he's usually a really happy guy, sometimes it can be annoying because when he's happy he'll start to sing songs from his favorite musicals, but you get over it and you get used to it. Without my daily dose of Mason's singing, I probably would barely get any work done around here.
Starting to my office, I head past old family photos of my mother and my dad. They didn't seem to be happy at all and I know exactly why. My father left me his journal when he died and so it isn't hard to imagine how hard it was to even smile in those pictures.
"Mason can you schedule a meeting with their Alpha?"
"Yes sir, I'll be good, and schedule a meeting."
The pack's reputation with others is getting better than when my dad was the alpha, and with Mason to help me we've acquired several different alliances with several different packs. Our military is just as strong as before if not stronger and we're smarter about how we take care of rogues. We make sure that rogues that cross are territory can be trusted before we allow them into our pack as omegas, and if they can't be trusted we put them in jail cells, until we can figure out their background information. You can never be too cautious with rogues, no matter how sad their life story is they could always be trying to bring your pack down.
Rogues could be working for hunters, they could be spies for another pack, they just can't be trusted worth a damn. But that doesn't make it any easier for me not to sympathize with them, some of their stories are just so heart breaking that it's hard to say no. But it's a necessary way to protect my pack from threats.
When I open the door to my office I'm surprised to see a beautiful woman with dark brown hair and eyes the color of honey. She has curves for days and legs a mile long and freckles dotted across her cheeks. She's the most beautiful women I've ever seen in my entire life. My heart clenches as I look into her eyes and sparks fly as I move closer to her.
"Your beta called for my father to arrange a meeting, and I want you to understand that we can't give you w-what you want," She says stuttering slightly and I can't help but smirk as I move closer to her. Her voice is so beautiful it's soft and warm, it causes a light shiver to travel up my spine. "An alliance between our packs would destroy us." She says a bit more firmly, like she's trying to stand her ground.
"That's fine." I say huskily, everything she does and says is arousing me and she probably noticed by my voice.
"What?" She asks perplexed that I've given up so easily; usually an alpha would stand his ground in matters such as this until they were able to meet with the alpha of the other pack.
"Sweetheart you're my mate, it doesn't matter if we have an alliance or not, because our packs will be joined eventually." She blushes and my hands twitch at my sides as I move close enough to touch her. "When your father arrives for our meeting I'll be sure to let him know." I say with a smirk and touch her face lightly. She flinches away from my hand and stomps out of my office, making sure to give me a harsh glare on her way out as she slams my office door shut. I sigh contently because I finally found my mate and I want her... bad.
