As the hatter kept walking through the woods, I could see that the trees were burned.
"Hatter, what happened here" I asked.
"Its to much of a long story" I could see his face turn from a smile to a straight face as he started to think. He wasn't happy.
I started to slide down from his top hat and on to his shoulder.
"What happen here?" I asked.
"I already told you, it's a really long story" he said impatiently.
"Hatter, just tell me!" I said loudly.
He grabbed me off of his shoulder and put me onto a burned stump. He began to walk away.
"What? You can't just leave me here, they will find me" I yelled.
He immediately stopped. He walked back over to me and I could see his eyes turn from red to orange.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry, but I have to go" he said worried.
"Hatter!" I yelled as he started to turn away.
He grabbed me and began to walk forward into the woods. He put me onto his shoulder. When we got to a certain place in the woods he stopped.
"It was here, that the tragic incident happened" he said breaking the silence. He put me onto an old stump and got on his knees and looked at me.
"What do you mean?" I questioned.
"Well, the story behind wonderland of course" he looked at me. I could obviously see he was upset thinking about it, or what ever he was about to tell me. "Why wonderland is how it is".
"Excuse me for asking, but what happen that was so bad" I asked.
"Well, just, look around. This place was beautiful before. There was a circus we held once here before".
"Really?" I said in disbelief.
"Yes" his lips curled into a faint smile.
I couldn't help but let my lips curl into a smile. His eyes turned from orange to green. His big green eyes just seemed so soft.
"So what happened here?" I asked.
"The queen of hearts, or the red queen". He said with anger in his words. "She destroyed everything".
"How did she do it?" I questioned.
"The jabberwocky" he answered.
"What is that?" I asked.
"One of the many creatures that the red queen has".
She has more! What if she hurt somebody with them. What if somebody died from one of her beast attacks. The bandersnatch hurt me.
"She sent the jabberwocky to destroy the festival and retrieve the crown, after he did, he lit everything on fire, everything burned down, when I looked at the remands I found my hat on the floor". His face was in disappointment.
"Hatter, I have to ask you something, why did you hide me when that man came?"
"You mean the man with the scar on his face and the heart eye patch covering it?" He asked. I nodded my head. "That is the king of hearts". His eyes trying not change colors. "He is looking for you".
My heart stared to pound in my chest. Why was he looking for me? What would he do if he found me? My mind started to fill with questions, as if I haven't asked a lot already. I felt like I should have known this, but I just didn't.
"Why was he looking for me?" My voice cracked.
His eyes immidetly changed when he looked at me. His big green eyes softened. I felt so mad that the hatter had to live in a world were people considered him a freak.
Even though I felt bad my mind kept on racing around with questions about why the king of hearts was looking for me. My find flouded with ideas.
"He wants to kill me, doesn't he" I said.
His mouth opened to speak, but nothing came out. I felt a warm tear roll down my cheak. I wanted to get out of this, "Wonderland". I couldn't just stand here waiting while the king of hearts was trying to hunt me down to kill me. If he wasn't trying to kill me then, why was he looking for me?
The hatter took his thumb and rubbed it against my cheek to whip my tears away.
"Alice, don't cry" I could here him say softly".
My hands were cupping my eyes. I was sobbing into my hands.
I quickly raised my head when I heard the sounds of clanging and horses. How long were they going to look for me! Once the hatter heard the noises he quickly grabbed me and put me on his hat. He started to run. We hid behind a tree for a little, while they past before running again.
The dog must have smelled me and led the soilders here. I didn't know if the hatter had a plan, or knew where to go, but he just kept running. When he stopped running I almost fell off the hat. I dug my fingers into the cloth wrapped around his top hat.
There was a river so he couldn't cross. He wanted to keep me safe. He grabbed his hat off his head.
"Hold on tight" he said before throwing his hat across the lake. "Gone with the bloody thing" he yelled after throwing it.
When I reached across the other side of the lake, I crashed down onto grass. A sharp pain spread up my arm to my back. I fell off the side of the hat. I managed to get up and walk under the hat. I thought about what was going go happen to the hatter. I felt so sad. I threatened the tears that were coming out of eyes. The tears were burning my eyes and nose. My eyes felt heavy again, I couldn't help myself from falling asleep.
-*-
I woke up to the sound of sniffing. My heart dropped into my stomach when I realized it was the dog. When he took the hat off from off of the ground over me, I stood up. I thought the soilders were with him, and the king of hearts.
"Hello, Alice" his dark voice said.
I was shocked the a dog was actually talking to me.
"Where did they take him" I asked sternly.
"I'm truly sorry" he said with a sad tone.
"Down" I said. He put his head down and I climbed on to him. "Take me to where the hatter is" I told him.
"But, he is with the red-".
"I don't care, he would do the same for me" I cut him off
"Okay" he said before barking and starting to take me to the red queens castle.
