I felt tingly from the date. It was an amazing date and an amazing goodnight kiss. I giggled remembering the incident on the Ferris. I was going to call Olli but I don’t kiss and tell.

My phone rang and I checked the caller ID, ‘the person you wish you were’. I rolled my eyes, speak of the devil. It was Olli, but I wonder when she changed her name.

“Hey! What’s up?” I asked popping the ‘p’.

“You’ve got to come to the hospital quick!” she answered sounding breathless.

“What? Why?” I asked standing up from my bed looking for my shoes.

The next words she said had my breath caught in my throat.

It’s your mum.

“I got here as soon as I can. What’s wrong?” I asked. I saw Olli and her family, surprisingly including Andrew, sitting in the waiting room’s uncomfortable chairs. Their faces looked filled with fatigue.

“Your mum…” Olli began, taking a deep breath she continued, “The doctors want to tell us something but since you didn’t answer your phone they called my mum.”

I felt my heart drop. While I was enjoying a date with harry my mum was fighting for her life? “B-but I thought-“I didn’t get to finish my sentence because the doctor walked into the waiting room.

“You are Mrs. Stephens’ daughter right?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m her daughter. Is everything going to be okay?” I asked him.

Olli and her family stood up too, waiting for the doctor’s verdict.

“It seems that the tumour is now a grade 2 tumour.” He began before I interrupted him.

I still didn’t know the actual name of the tumour.

“What is the name of the tumour?” I questioned. “And why didn’t you tell me the name of it before?”

“Your mother didn’t want me to tell you the detailed information unless situations were looking dire,” he explained, pausing before continuing, “The tumour is an anaplastic astrocytoma tumour.”

“Erm in English please,” Olli asked looking sheepish.

I smiled at her attempt to loosen up the tension but I didn’t understand what the doctor meant either.

“An anaplastic astrocytoma grows quickly and spreads into nearby tissues. The tumor cells look different from normal cells.” He explained simply.

The doctor gave us some information leaflets to read later. I asked him if we could see my mum, he replied giving us her room number and telling us she was awake.

“Hey mum,” I said when I entered her room. It was one of your cliché rooms, White everywhere. I wondered for the people who would wake up after a concussion, they might think they are in heaven!

“The doctor says I can leave tomorrow,” she told me while smiling.

“Mum,” I sighed, “have they told you about your… um… condition?” I asked.

She nodded, “They have and I’ve realised that I’m not happy with my job, I want to live my remaining years happy and not stressed out,” she paused and chuckled a small sad smile on her face, “So what I’m going to do is quit my job. I want to spend more time with you and I want to feel free, not tied down. Do you support my actions?”

I grinned at her then told her that I would support her no matter what.
