Your Vampire Boss and You: How to keep building a lasting relationship
Sterling and I were in a battle of wills. With the sun coming up the victor would soon be decided. Sterling waited for a few moments, watching me like a hawk, and then slowly backed up until the door was touching his back. I sat back into the couch that was my fortress for this battle. Sterling slid audibly down the door ending his journey with a loud thud. He then stretched out his legs and shifted trying to make himself comfortable. He was going to die there for the day and try to block my way out. I watched him forcing my face to look as disinterested as possible.
“Amy, go close the blinds.” Sterling ordered in a gruff monotone.
I didn’t hesitate. I may be mad and fed up but I didn’t want Sterling to really die by leaving the blinds up. When I finished my task I returned to my previous perch, sitting down with the grace of a prom queen on her throne. He could go ahead and die, literally, on my doorstep. I could pull him away from it if need be. Sterling was probably counting on me being too weak to move him. Well, he would be sadly mistaken. I hadn’t been going to the gym for nothing.
“ Amy,” Sterling sounded out in a mocking tone. “Have you ever seen one of us die? I mean… rest for the day.” I didn’t look at him and he sniggered out, “I doubt you’ve ever seen one of us, um, sleeping.”
I clasped my hands together and forced myself to pay him no heed. He was right. I had never seen a vampire rest for the day. I had never been in the situation, and the thought of it didn’t thrill me. But I be damned if I let Sterling get to me. I heard him chuckling and against my better judgment I looked at him. His eyes were sparkling with an impish light as he smiled a toothy grin that made me cringe. He was getting to me, and he knew it the bastard.
“You’re a bit squeamish my dear. If I could I would love to see how you would react to my lifeless corpse.” He laughed out lulling his head to the side.
“Just go to sleep already.” I huffed out, crossing my arms and looking away from him. I really should just ignore him.
“You’d be better off if you just went to bed yourself Amy.” Sterling stated in a dry voice. “I understand your upset, but you don’t have anywhere to go. Your car is back at the mall, and you have no one you could possibly stay with that won’t try to send you back, or allow Roger entrance to come get you. Roger will find you, and he will drag you back here. You can’t win this one, so you should just admit defeat before you get yourself into real trouble.”
I glared at him. And then took a moment to calm down before smiling and sighing out, “You underestimate me.”
Sterling shook his head. “No…you underestimate the damages this course of action will produce. You could end up destroying Roger and you both.”
I checked my watch. Sterling only had a few moments left. I stood gathering up my things. I could feel his eyes upon me as I placed my purse under my arm. “If we are doomed, then the fault would lay with Roger. He could’ve prevented this whole thing if he would have just been honest.” I glanced at my watch, the sun would be rising now. “Time to die.”
Sterling smiled slowly as the light in his eyes started to fade. The smile at his lips started to sag at the edges as the rest of his body went limp. His head lulled forward and a strange feeling took over me. It was as if I was trapped in a vacuum. The pressure in the air turned dense and stagnant as the hairs on my arms stood up. I was holding my breath as a strange mist started to pour out of Sterling. It flowed out of his pores upwards gathering slowly together. It was a dense glittery mass that was winding and coiling together as it hovered over his body. I heard myself gasp as the mist then took shape into a small cloud and suddenly started to flow and creep towards me. I found that I couldn’t move, dumbfounded by the eerie spectacle that was before me. It whizzed by me towards the windows. I half expected the mass to smash the blinds but instead passed through without a sound. The pressure in the apartment turned back to normal in an instant and I was left alone with Sterling’s cold body.
