We left to get my things from my house. I walked inside cautiously, afraid that my parents and siblings were home. The police officers were in the living room to arrest them when they did come home, so I was safe….for now. I went into my room and took out my threadbare backpack, noticing that I still had my pudding, canned peaches and bread roll left over from lunch at school. I opened the pudding and ate it hungrily—I was so hungry! I ate the bread and the peaches as well, relishing in the peaches’ sweet taste.
I packed my four other shirts into my bag, along with my shorts, underwear and stuffed animal. He was a black teddy bear with a red bow, but the bow was dirty. He was really limp and floppy, and had a hole in his neck. His fur wasn’t super soft anymore because I had held him too often. He was my only friend.
I didn’t own a toothbrush or anything like that; I had to use my finger. I only had one pair of pants, the ones I was wearing, and a pair of shorts. Five shirts and a threadbare, duct-taped backpack and a teddy bear. That was it, all of my possessions.
I walked into the living room where Andy and the guys were talking to the police officers. Sammi wasn’t anywhere to be seen; probably in the bathroom. Everyone stopped their conversation when I walked into the room, making me suspicious, but I wouldn’t ask. That was rude and a rule—don’t ask questions and don’t speak unless spoken to. And I wouldn’t make eye-contact; that was a rule, too.
“Is that all you have?” Ashley asked. I nodded my head, looking at the ground. I played with the hem of my battered shirt, picking at the fraying ends. I heard shuffling feet and looked up, seeing Jinxx’s shirt. I grabbed his hand without thinking and quickly dropped it; another rule, no touching. I wasn’t allowed to touch anyone, but everyone else was allowed to touch me. Fair, right? I flinched, waiting for a punishing smack, but none came.
“I’m not going to hurt you, ever. Especially not for holding my hand,” Jinxx said. I nodded my head and held his hand again. It brought me comfort, this small gesture.
“Ready to go?” Jinxx asked, and I nodded my head, showing no emotion. Another rule, no emotional displays, even no smiling. I think I forget how to smile, I haven’t smiled in such a long time; I can’t even remember the last time I smiled. We left my house and got into their tour bus. I had overheard some kids at my school talking about how Black Veil Brides only had one more performance on their tour, and it was in Burbank.
“The bunks are straight back, feel free to pick whatever open one you can find,” Andy said and plopped on the couch, the guys following suit. I walked back into the bunk area and heard some girls’ voices. Probably Sammi, I thought. I picked the bunk in the middle on the right and walked back out into the living area. I noticed that there were three other girls besides Sammi, and I immediately became scared of the new strangers. I sat next to Jinxx and cowered into him. He patted my back.
“It’s alright, they won’t hurt you either,” He said, reassuring.
“Emerson, this is Juliet, Andy’s girlfriend; Ella, Jake’s girlfriend and Lauren, CC’s girlfriend,” Jinxx introduced them, gesturing to each girl as he said their name. I nodded my head at them and continued to look at my old shoes.
“How much stuff do you have, Emer?” Andy asked me and I shrugged.
“Five shirts, a pair of shorts and these jeans,” I said. “Oh! And my black sweat-shirt.” I looked in Andy’s direction.
“Why won’t you make eye-contact?” Ashley asked.
“It’s a rule,” I said and I could feel Jinxx’s arm tighten around me slightly.
“What other rules are there?” Jake asked, shocked. I didn’t want to, but I had to answer.
“Answer any and all questions asked, only speak when spoken to, don’t make eye-contact, don’t touch anything or anyone, don’t shower unless given permission, always express gratitude, always tell the truth, don’t go anywhere without permission, don’t leave until excused, don’t talk to anyone, do every household chore and make every meal, don’t ask for anything, don’t show emotion and don’t go to school unless granted permission. I must address mommy as ‘Ma’am’ and my brothers and daddy as ‘Sir’. I’m not allowed to eat food either, so I have to sneak it when I’m at school,” I answer. Everyone was quiet; Andy was the first one to break the silence.
