I woke up to someone picking me up and cradling me to their chest. My eyes snapped open in shock and I tensed, scared about what was going to happen to me. My panicked eyes met Jinxx’s calm ones, and I relaxed, letting my eyes slide closed again. I was exhausted and had fallen asleep on the couch of the bus—we had been watching Paranormal Activity, and I had been hiding behind Andy when I fell asleep. I’m sure there were pictures taken. Oh joy.
I was placed on my bunk and tucked in, something that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. Jinxx walked out of the bunk area and turned the light off, leaving me to my sleep.
I woke up when I fell out of the bunk and onto the floor. I looked at the clock on my iPod and saw that it was 4:00 am. Old habits die hard, I guess. I walked into the ‘living room’ area of the bus and sat on the couch. I turned the TV on and watched some show—I’ve never really watched TV before. It was about some sponge in the ocean that talked, it was funny.
I was curled into a ball in a nest of blankets when someone walked onto the bus and went into the kitchen. To say I was scared was an understatement. I jumped from the couch quietly and ran into the bunk area, closing the door behind me. I turned the light on and smacked everyone on the cheek.
“There’s someone on the bus!” I whisper yelled, shaking slightly. I was freaked. I jumped into my bunk and hid under the covers.
“Get the bat. Jinxx, stay here with Emer. Sammi, Ella, and Juliet stay here as well,” I heard Andy’s muffled voice say. I felt the slim mattress on my bunk dip down to accommodate Jinxx’s weight and I inched over to him, still under the false sense of safety that was my blankets. I was shaking uncontrollably, and even though I knew it was ridiculous, I couldn’t stop. Jinxx started rubbing my back to try to soothe me.
“WHAT THE FUCK DUDE?!” I heard someone shout and then I heard laughter. I peeked my head out from under my blankets to see that the girls had left and Jinxx was chuckling under his breath.
“It’s okay Emer, it’s just Matt,” I heard Andy shout from the kitchen-area. Jinxx got out of the bunk and helped me down. I grabbed my fuzzy green blanket and wrapped it around myself, taking the bunched-up ends in one hand, Jinxx’s hand in another. We walked out into the living-kitchen-area, I was hiding behind Jinxx.
“Emer, this is Matt, one of my best-friends. Matt, this is Emerson; she’s really shy,” Andy introduced us and I peeked at Matt from behind Jinxx’s arm. Matt waved and I gave him a small wave in return, blushing slightly. I was really embarrassed about earlier.
“Sorry about earlier, I thought you were an intruder,” I said quietly, stepping out from behind Jinxx’s back. I saw Matt’s eyes widen when he saw the bruises on my face, the cut lip, the black eye, the boney face, the missing hair from the side of my head where mother had ripped it out. He tried to compose himself and Andy put his arm on Matt’s shoulder.
“We’ll explain in a minute. But first, who’s hungry?” Andy asked and everyone shouted.
Ashley decided that he wanted to make pancakes and all the guys ended up making them. Long story short, the kitchen was a flour-egg mess. CC had gotten some flour on Jake, and Jake retaliated. It ended up being a full-scale food fight.
“Go sit down; I will make them,” I said and shoved them out of the kitchen area, towards the bathroom. I went back to the stove and made the batter. I poured neat little circles on the skillet and while they were cooking, I cleaned up the kitchen. I quickly finished making the pancakes and brought them to the table where everyone was waiting. I waited until everyone had gotten their share before I grabbed four. As I was eating, the guys explained to Matt about my bruised figure, which was still concealed inside the blanket.
“I’m sorry; I know I didn’t have any involvement, but still,” Matt said and I just shrugged my shoulders, looking at my empty plate. I cleared the table and was about to wash the dished when Ashley came in.
“Let me,” He said and I nodded, smiling slightly—the gesture still felt weird. I lay on the couch and continued to watch the show about the sponge.
“What is this show, anyway?” I asked and CC gasped.
“You’ve never seen SpongeBob?!” He asked, shocked. I shook my head and turned my eyes back to the screen.
“I’ve never been allowed to watch TV before,” I said.
“Well, then I guess we are going to have to educate you!” He exclaimed and plopped on the couch beside me, causing me to flinch.
“Sorry,” He said quickly, and I gave him a small smile. We watched TV for an hour until I had to get ready for school—it was a Friday.
I dressed in light blue jeans and a black long-sleeved shirt. I pulled my shoes on and grabbed my backpack. I walked into the bathroom and stared at my reflection. What was I going to do with my hair? I couldn’t let people see the giant patch of missing hair. I walked into the living area and put my backpack down.
“What can I do with this?” I asked, gesturing towards my hair-missing-patch. The girls got up and pulled me toward the bathroom. I stood as they ‘worked their magic”. They finished--my short hair was pinned back on the side with no hair so it looked like I shaved it like that. They did make-up to cover the bruising and I thanked them. I walked out, said good-bye to everyone, and left the bus. I walked out of the bus area and ran the rest of the way to school.
