I woke up with a start, hitting my head on Sammi’s bunk above me. It was dark. I had tears running down my cheeks, and I was pretty close to hyperventilating, I was crying so hard. My hair was stuck to my sweaty face, and I was shivering furiously. About .5 seconds after I hit my head, I saw Sammi’s feet peek out from the top of her bunk, and then she jumped down. She took my face in her hands, feeling my forehead.

“She’s burning up,” She said, kicking Jinxx, who was in the bunk underneath me, awake. He went to get some Children’s Tylenol.

“What’s wrong baby?” Sammi asked, wiping some of the messy hair from my face. I felt gross.

“I h-h-ha-a-d a n-n-night-tm-mare,” I forced out, trying to calm myself down. But I couldn’t, I just kept thinking about my family and what they did to me. I couldn’t escape my dad’s gaze, and everywhere I looked I saw his face. Sammi wrapped me in the safe warmth of her arms.

“It’s okay, Shhhh, it was just a dream. It’s not real,” She kept repeating over and over, stroking my hair as I cried into her shoulder. Jinxx came back with some medicine and a glass of water, which he gave to me once I had calmed down enough to take them. I took the medicine, making a face as the horrible grape taste invaded my mouth, and downed the water, not realizing how thirsty I was.

“Let’s give you a bath, sound good? It’ll help you relax,” Sammi said. She told Jinxx that he could go back to bed, to which he had no argument (well, it is about 2 in the morning), and scooped me up in her arms. She carried me to the bathroom and set me down on the toilet as she started the water. She added some bubbles, then came over to me and helped remove my gross clothing. She helped me into the warm water.

“Better?” She asked, and I nodded my head. It felt really nice. She washed my hair and let me soak. I yawned, and she went to go get clothes. I got out shakily, almost falling several times. I wrapped my towel around myself and waited, shivering slightly. Sammi came back holding my pair of fuzzy panda PJ’s, which she helped me put on. Once I was dressed, she helped me into my bunk, and tucked me into the clean sheets—she must have changed them while I was in the bath. She kissed my forehead.

“Goodnight angel, sleep well,” She said and then climbed into her own bunk. Warm, clean, and exhausted, I fell asleep almost instantly. I woke up about four hours later, however, to another nightmare. I couldn’t wake up Sammi because her bunk was too high up, but I could wake up Jinxx. I got out of my bunk, feeling quite wobbly, but I was scared and needed comfort.

“Dad?” I whispered, trying to make out Jinxx’s face in the darkness of the bunk. I could see some light through the window next to my bunk, but it did little to light the bus.

“Emer, are you okay? What’s wrong?” Jinxx asked, his voice thick with sleep. He sat up, being careful not to hit his head on my bunk.

“I had another nightmare,” I said, my voice cracking a little, tears threatening to overflow my eyes again.

“Here, let’s get you some more Tylenol, your fever must be spiking again, it’s been about four hours,” He said, taking my hand and leading me into the kitchen area, where he gave me a glass of water and some more grape medicine. God, I hated this stuff.

“Can you go back to bed, or are you still scared?” He asked, his eyes kind. I was still scared, but I was too tired to stay awake.

“I’m still scared,” I responded, my eyelids threatening to droop.

“Why don’t you sleep with me?” He said, taking me into his arms and carrying me to the bunks. He crawled in, and I followed. He tucked me in beside him, and I fell asleep pretty quickly.
