Because in the end...

There's an awful thud as the truck makes contact with James.
My ears ring as it takes me a few minutes to process what just happened. The sound of the truck slamming on it's brakes a few blocks up knocks me out of my trance.

"James!" I scream running to him and kneeling in the rapidly pooling blood around him.

Blood is everywhere and his right leg is bent at an odd angle. I also see a white object sticking out. I scream his name over and over again, but he never responds. his eyes are closed and he barely has a pulse.

"Help!" I scream.

Tears are pouring down my face as I hold him in my arms and rock helplessly back and forth, not caring that my clothes are now drenched in blood.

My mom and dad come running out of the house and gasp at the sight before them. The guy who hit James comes running up with a phone to his ear explaining the situation to the 911 dispatcher.

A few minutes later, the ambulance comes and they hurriedly bring the the stretcher out. My mom and dad are trying to pry me off of James, but I don't let go without a fight. I scream, kick, and scratch not wanting to let him go. They finally get me off him long enough to let the ambulance drive away with him.

When we arrive at the hospital, they told us we would have to wait since we were not family. We waited for six hours, but that didn't matter, I just needed to tell him I was sorry.

I sit in this uncomfortable plastic chair staring off into space, still in my bloody clothes. Suddenly a long white lab coat fills my vision knocking me out of my trance.

I scramble out of my seat, a hopeful expression on my face as I await the doctors verdict. My parents stand behind me holding on to me, being my life support.

"Hi my name is Dr. Tate," She starts, shaking my parents hands. "I assuming you are awaiting word on James Bellik's condition?" She softly asks looking at her charts in her hands.

I frantically nod my head.

"Well we did all we could." My heart drops at her words, "He has server head injuries, internal bleeding and a server broken bone that probably can't be set back into place. If he makes it out of this I doubt weather he'll be able to walk on two feet again," She smiles sadly,"It's up to him now weather he lives or not. Since none of his family members showed up I guess one of you can go in and see how he is doing."

As she leads me to his room I chant over and over in my head, he is going to be OK.

I slowly walk into his room to the sight of his frail body being swallowed by the hospital bed. The muscles that had once filled his clothes were now deflated like a balloon. Purple bags are under his eyes and his hair is shaved off, head rapped in gauze and bandaged.  He had tubes connecting him to monitors that beeped softly, telling me he was still alive, for now.

I grab his cold hand and squeeze it, tears running down my face.

"Please," I whisper, "Wake up, I'm sorry." As if on cue his eyes crack open and his heart monitor starts to speed up.

"Huuuuuu...Huuu.." He breaths, trying speak."No..... I.. I'm .... Sorry." He finishes a soft smile playing on his face.

He let's out one more breath and closes his eyes, going limp. I stare at him and jump when the heart monitor let out a long non-ending beep.

I let go of his hand and numbly walk out to my parents. They stand expectantly with worried expressions.

"He's.. He's.. Gone." With that last word I began to let out gut wrenching sobs.

My parents give me pitying looks before they embrace me in their arms. I just stand there unresponsive.

When I get home, I don't eat dinner, I just go numbly straight to my room. I shut the door and close my eyes.

He is really gone. I think to myself. I walk to my bed and look down. It was a pink origami Kusudama flower. I gently walk to it and pick it up. It falls apart in my hands revealing a message.
I'm sorry.
