THE TRUTH WILL FREE YOU
"Daddy," Kiva giggled climbing into Brocus lap and snuggled into his arms. "When you are going to be on the TV?" she asked.
"In just a few minutes," Donovan answered smiling. He sat down on the sofa next to Brocus with a huge bowl of popcorn. He spread his feet slightly to allow Darius to sit on the floor after he'd sat a tray of beverages on the coffee table. They were all in their pajamas because they had plans to watch a movie after his interview ended it would be their first official family movie night.
This is so cool Dad, Darius beamed. Donovan remained quiet, he was just hoping that he was received well, he didn't want to shame his church in any way. Which was ironic because he knew that's exactly what was about to happen. He hadn't spoken to his father because his business trip had been extended, but he expected him back on Monday evening. He'd admitted to Brocus that he was dreading the whole ordeal. He wasn't exactly sure how much he wanted to divulge. He hadn't even told his father that Patrice was in jail. She'd been there for two days now. He was told that the judge's docket was too full and she would be there through the weekend. He prayed for her safety and that she was being civil to others, but he knew her well enough to know that she was probably the most uncivil person she could be right now. Patrice did not take being common good, she had a higher sense of herself no one had to put her on a pedestal she was already there.
Donovan's head snapped to the TV screen as squeals filled his ears. Brocus and the children were cheering at his appearance on the screen.
"You look great Dad", Darius complimented.
"Yeah Daddy you are so handsome." Kiva agreed and crawled from Brocus lap to Donovan's and wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.
"I agree." Brocus added smiling.
"Thanks guys, but I think I look pretty nervous." he volunteered. He'd taken three different suits with him to New York, but at the last minute ended up buying a whole new one at the urging of his PR people; they didn't think the colors would look good on the television set. He recalled how he'd groan at the thought of having to make a new selection, but now seeing the results he was pleased. The dark gray suit with burgundy tie popped with the sets white background.
"I think you look great Van, confident even." Brocus smile broadens. Donovan smiled back at him and took his hand and entwined their fingers. He didn't know what he would have done without him for the past two days. The night, Patrice was arrested, he'd insisted that Brocus sleep in his bed with him. He didn't want to be without him after such a traumatic day. He had not been surprised when he woke the next morning to find that he was already up and downstairs making breakfast for the kids. He'd known that Brocus would never have let the children find them in bed together. He loved that he had decorum, always appropriate in front of the kids he was actually surprised that Brocus was allowing him to hold his hand in front of them but he had loosened up on the last two days.
Brocus had been serving as primary caretaker for the children since Patrice's arrest and Donovan had chosen to come to his apartment every night and stay with them all, he'd only been home once to retrieve some files. He loved waking up to his family the way he felt it should be they all mill together perfectly.
Donovan looked at Brocus as the host asked him about the recent decisions on gay marriage and as an Evangelical Pastor what was his opinion and how it contradicted the church. He'd answered as honestly as possible without being a hypocrite because he had plans in the very near future to take advantage of the court's ruling. Unfortunately gay marriage was not legal in Arizona but it was not banned so they could still share many of the benefits of marriage if they married in a different state. Since Patrice's arrest, he had thought seriously of them packing up and moving all together, but it felt too much like running and he and Brocus definitely were not running and hiding from anyone anymore that much he was not relenting.
