Chapter 4: Lothal night walk
Luna's P.O.V
I walk through a dark grey hall silently as a red light flashes every once and awhile. Everything fades out then comes back but I no longer walk down a hallway I stand in an Imperial tie fighters dock and in front of me, in a tight Inquisitor suit, is my brother, Brandon, brandishing a long double bladed lightsaber. Everything flashes and Brandon is running at me only seven feet away from me when a voice calls out. "Luna! NO!" Everything flashes again and I'm on the ground staring up at the ceiling before a ISB agents face appears above me. "No no no. Rekhesh she's hurt! She's hurt!" He yells over his shoulder before he looks down at me again and his hand lands on my cheek. "Come on Luna you can't die on us." He whispers as he looks me over a small but noticeable not of hysteria in his voice. Suddenly a figure starts running over to us. When I finally see who it is my heart beats faster as the familiar pale face comes into view.
I shoot up and bang my head into the metal above my bed I slide out of my bed and land on the floor silently and turn around to see Sabine laying in her bed sound asleep. I nod my head before I turn and head to the door and look through the force for anyone outside of my room awake. The only one still awake is Kanan so I slowly open my door with the force, but only enough for me to slip through, and I head to the ramp silently creeping down the halls and ladder till I reach the ramp. To my surprise the ramp is open but I don't think twice about it I just run down the ramp and into the tall dark grasses of Lothal. Once I'm a good distance from the Ghost I stop and fall into the grass and let my hair surround me. I stare up at the star filled sky and smile as a soft but cool breeze rushes over me. Something falls down next to me and I shoot up and reach for my fathers lightsaber that rests in my boot. When I get a good look I see a tall figure with deep blue green eyes and dark brown hair drawn back.
"K-Kanan!" I gasp as I jump up.
All the old Jedi does is chuckle. "Calm down kid I'm not gonna kill yeah for coming out here for a walk." He promises and I shift from one foot to the other and watch him for a second before I lay back down and look up at the stars. The both of us are quiet for sometime till he speaks up. "Something tells me you're not out here only to look up at the stars." He comments silently.
I stay quiet as I think over what I should say as I start to pull on a strand of hair before I speak. "When... When I was little and my mom would tell me stories... I knew they weren't just stories, I knew they were HER stories. When... when I ran inside to tell her the Empire was at our house... I'd never seen her that worried before and when she was fighting and she was telling me to... to run away she sounded so scared... and when she... when she screamed... when she was shot I just." I sit up and pull my knees up underneath my chin. "I wonder... had I stayed inside and let our house crush me... would they still be alive?" I ask aloud and I look up at the stars. "I can't help but blame myself for their death." I admit.
"Luna it's not your fault." Kanan tells me as he sits up next to me.
I look straight at him and frown. "How do you know?" I ask him. "How do you know things wouldn't have turned out different had I done something different?" I ask.
"Because I've been in your position. Not with my mother and father but with my master." He tells me and I turn to him curiously. "When the Republic fell there was Order 66. Did your mother ever tell you about that?" He asks and I nod my head. "During Order 66 my master and I had been on a mission. We had just finished and had headed back to camp when they clones turned on us. My master told me to run. At first I refused to go. When I did I heard her cry out and when I turned she was falling to the ground. But I always blamed myself. Finally I realized it wasn't my fault. I did as I was told. I made her proud by doing as she told me and by surviving and caring on what she lived for." He explains and I look down. "One of the hardest things to do is forgive yourself but when you finally do you'll realize you have another chance to make them proud again." He explains and I nod my head.
We just sit on the ground looking at each other as the night drags on. "You're like him." I admit.
"What?" Kanan asks me.
"My father. You're like him that's why I treat you different than the others. I look up to you." I admit softly not looking at him afraid that he won't like what I've said.
"So that's why you call me Lord Ponytail." He states before he chuckles a bit. "I've never been good with kids but with you and Ezra I feel this over powering need to protect the both of you and make sure you're both safe and away from the Empire." He tells me as he lifts my head with a single hand under my chin. I raise my eyes to his face and he smiles and gives a small laugh before pulling me in as the tears fall. He pulls me onto his lap and wraps his arms around me. I cry into his shoulder as he starts to rock back and forth while he rubs my back. Suddenly I feel the force shift and I jerk back as I feel something pop into existence. I look at Kanan but all I see his a green brown blur.
"W-what happened?" I ask him softly. I can feel his heart thundering in his chest against my arm.
"Open yourself to the force." He instructs softly.
When I open myself to the force I feel a sort of bridge connecting me to Kanan. I quickly look up at him wide eyed but I still can't clearly see him. "We're connected." I state and he smiles.
"Yeah kid we're connected." He says before he pulls me closer. "We're connected now and I'll never let anything happen to you."
"Kanan?" I lay my head on his shoulder as I start to feel heavier and tired.
"Yeah?"
And as things start to go dark four words slip through my lips. "I love you dad."
