I changed in the bathroom, into a pair of nursing scrubs provided to me by the stranger.
After the encounter at the bus stop, I got on the bus, and in the early hours of the morning, when the sun barely peaked the horizon, I got off my stop. I was two states over from the one I began in, and still the stranger managed to find me. The woman met me when I got off the bus, and pulled me to the nearest gas station. Leading me to the bathroom, she shoved the blue scrubs and a surgical mask into my arms and pushed me into a stall.
"Here, put your hair in this hair tie, it would attract too much attention otherwise."
"Why would it draw attention?" I wondered suddenly, pulling the blue pants over my ripped jeans.
"It's purple."
"Fair enough." I said with a sigh. After changing out of my shirt and putting the blue one on, I pulled the mask over my mouth. I opened the stall door, the woman standing and staring at me. She held her hand to her chin in thought.
"Put these on." She said, handing me a pair of hipster framed glasses. I hesitantly took them, raising a brow at them. I slipped them on my face. They didn't change my vision, but they were very uncomfortable. "Take your piercings out."
"No!" I said holding my hands against my face. I had two lip piercings and a nose piercing and I loved them.
"Take them out." I could feel the woman's glare behind her dark tinted sunglasses. Her sunglasses look like the ones police wear to intimidate civilians. Fair enough. I knew my task now, I wasn't in the dark anymore. They were training Med Techs today at the local Walgreen's, having them administer flu shots.
After taking out my piercings, and slipping them into a small plastic bag, received from the woman, she told me the rest of the plan.
"I will keep your belongings in a storage unit located in Walgreen's. It will be in the back left corner of the store by the emergency exit. Now listen, take this ID tag," she said handing me a card. I had the smallest chance of looking at it before she started talking again. "you are going to walk into the Walgreen's, by the time I drop you off there, you will be 5 minutes late for the training. Since the woman I had to eliminate to receive that tag has brown hair, your story, if asked, will be you are late because you were trying to remove the purple dye from your hair, which was dyed there by a few of your room mates while you were sleeping. They should accept your answer, but then question your mask. It's a simple answer, 'I have a cold' is what you will say. After the interrogation by the teacher, you and one other woman will be shown how to properly administer the flu shots. After 3 or 4 successful times, the teacher will move on to another pharmacy or store to teach a few more Med Techs before returning. Once the teacher leaves, you and your "college" will be at separate stations across the store. You will find in your station that there is a box of full syringes under the shelf in your station. Grab this box out, and start administering those shots instead of the flu shots-"
"What do the shots do?" I asked after a moment of her speaking.
"That's none of your concern, please keep your questions until the end." She said. I nodded my head ok. "Administer the shots until there is no more. Do NOT go back to administering the flu shots, go to the back of the store immediately after you run out of our shots, and retrieve your belongings. Change in the bathroom quickly, put back in your piercings, take the glasses off, and wear your hat to cover your hair. You have to follow around your FIRST patient that you administered our shot to, and keep track of them very closely. 12 hours after their shot, they should collapse, you are going to call this number," She said handing me a slip of paper, "and we will find your location immediately. When the person collapses, you need to evacuate as quick as possible, or else you may end up dead."
"I AM GOING TO END UP DEAD?!" I whisper yelled. She shushed me as someone walked in. They took one look at us and walked straight out. I guess a purple haired nurse and a shady looking person is enough to turn anyone away.
"You might, only if you are not able to escape within 1 minute of the person collapsing."
"How am I supposed to follow this first person if i have to keep giving out shots until they are gone? That's going to take at least an hour right?"
"Aren't you a smart one? You ask such important questions. The answer to that is, after you change out of the scrubs, I will be waiting outside. My accomplices will give me the current location of the patient and I will take you to them, after that, you're on your own. Feel free while you are tracking the patient, to take a moment to call the person you plan to save, they should have plenty of time to meet up with you."
"Oh geez.. Ok, yeah, i'm ready." I said, feeling really anxious. This is probably the most terrifying thing I have done all year, maybe not as scary as leaving home with no where to go, but I think this tops it. Suddenly I realize, even with the information given, I am still running into a tunnel with the task, and what's at the end, I have no clue of.
"You are doing the human race a huge favor today. It's Lucy, right? Lucy Sanders?" She said. She knows my name? That's a little creepy.
"How do you know my name?"
"If I told you, you may back out on me. I will tell you when the job is done and you are safe, ok?"
"Ok."
