Kacey:
I have been thinking about Ryder ever since that night. We haven't talked in person but the same Facebook messages are still going on.
I have been trying to ignore my feelings but, why does it have to be so difficult?
A ding from my phone pulls me out of my bed and my thoughts.
I picked up my phone to find a new message from Jennifer.
'Hey! I haven't seen you all summer! Want to have a girls day?'
This is perfect! I will be able to stop thinking and just have some fun. So I reply,
'Sure. Your house in 15 mins'
Once I see it send I skip to my closet (yes skip. don't judge me) and grab my favorite blue summer dress. I grab my white flats and look in the mirror. I touch my K necklace that Ryder got me for my birthday a few years ago. I never take it off.
My parents are gone so I leave them a note saying I'm with Jennifer.
Grabbing the keys I go to open the door ready to leave, but am faced by Ryder with his hand up to knock.
"Hi." We same in sync.
"What's up?" I ask seeing the look on his face. A mixture of sadness and fear is displayed across his face.
"I just... Never mind. You seem to be busy." He says gesturing at my outfit and keys.
I give him a slight smile but answer, "No. What do you need?"
"Can I come in?" He asks looking behind me.
"Sure."
I set down my keys and send Jenna a quick text saying I'll be over in an hour.
I see Ryder sit on the lavender couch in the living room, but before I join him, I go to the freezer and grab a pint of Cherry Garcia I have for emergency's. Then I go to the drawer and grab 2 spoons.
I walk back into the living room and grab a cushion off the couch. I set it on the floor in front of Ryder and hand him the ice cream and the spoons. I sit down and get comfortable and he hands me one of the spoons.
"Now tell me your problems." I say digging into the ice cream.
"Well, it's just..... My parents." Ryder's parents have been fighting since before I knew him. But they swore to Ryder that they would never get divorced, so he is forced to listen to their nasty screams every night. "They got in another fight but this time it was worse. They called the police over a bowl. A stupid bowl! And I was trying to ignore them but I just couldn't. All of a sudden I hear my mom stomping up the stairs and packing a suitcase. I wanted to go out and talk to her but I just couldn't face them." He finishes while he eats the last of the ice cream.
"You can always stay here if you want." I say through my last mouthful of the ice cream. "The guest bedroom is still open, and my parents wouldn't mind. Even if its just for a night or a day. Whenever."
"Thanks," He says smiling slightly through all of his pain.
I stand and take the empty pint and the two dirty spoons, walk to the kitchen and walk back. By the time I got back (even though it took about 5 seconds to go to the kitchen) Ryder was gone.
I sigh, shaking my head and grab the keys to leave.
On the way to Jennifer's house I can't stop thinking about what Ryder told me. His parents have fought before but not like this.
Before I know it I'm at Jennifer's. It's almost as if my mind has carried me here.
I sigh, unbuckling my seat belt and opening the car door.
