When Vernon Boyd's name had been drawn out of the reaping ball, all he felt like doing was crying. But he kept himself together and did his best to look tough as he walked up to the stage.

And above all, confident. If he was going into that arena of the 74th Hunger Games, he had to make his younger sister, Alicia Boyd, proud. He had to make it out alive.

Vernon was used to being called by his last name. He had been ever since his father had died. He and Alicia had a hard time going through that, but they did it. Eventually.

Someone else from district nine who had lost their parents was Erica Reyes. Also known as the female tribute from nine for this years games.

Erica had been through a lot during her life. At an extremely young age, she was diagnosed to being epileptic and even when she took her pills for it, the ceasures wouldn't stop.

They kept coming and got worse every time and at one point, Erica thought she was going to die. Lucky for her, the bite worked and it healed her. She no longer had to worry about being an epileptic.

Both Boyd and Erica were bitten by the same person. Derek Hale. They owed him right now. They made a promise to him to keep him and his district partner, Paige, alive. It sounded like an okay promise, but not after they got to see the competetion for the games.

The three of them were mostly afraid of the careers, the ones from district one and two. But they were also frightened of the district three tributes.

A true alpha and a werewolf hunter! Erica had yelled at Derek. How do you expect us to keep you alive in there? And what about us, huh? How are we supposed to stay alive!

That was a question all three if them hadn't thought about all too clearly. But as Erica had asked it out loud, her and Boyd took it into consideration if they really should protect Derek and Paige.

They both came to a conclusion during their one on one combat in the training area. As they were fighting, they came close enough to give each other their answers.

No. They wouldn't protect anyone but themselves and that was final.

"Are you doing okay?" Vernon had asked Erica as he approached her sitting at the end of the stairwell, fiddling with her fingers.
He leaned his right arm on the railing whilst the other was in his pocket.

"Alright, I guess." Erica replied in a sour tone, but Vernon could hear her heartbeat beating a bit faster than usual and he had known his district partner for quite some time, so he almost automatically knew that she had something on her mind. "Don't lie to me Reyes. I can hear your heartbeat."

The blonde looked up at her partner and arose from the stairs and silently started to walk towards the elevator that was roughly right next to their spot. She pressed the button and then felt the warmth of Boyd's hands covering hers. A weak smile appeared on her lips and they stepped into the elevator together.

This, the training, the interview, the 'fight until death' thing, it was something they would do and had done together. And that's how they would survive, together.

When it appeared to be Erica's turn to get up on stage in her red, puffy dress, she gave her partner a quick kiss on the cheek before heading up to the stage without any regrets. But most importantly of all, she was wearing a genuine smile that held throughout the entire interview with Ceasar Flickerman.

The district nine girl made her way back, escorted by her assistants and as she did, she glanced at Vernon one last time before heading to her room on the ninth floor if the building.

Vernon felt the confidence in his veins and walked up the staircase just to sit down again, only this time, it wasn't Erica.
The interview went on pretty good and pretty fast, but it felt longer for Vernon. He just wasn't used to the amount of attention he was getting then and there.

It was almost a time skip before Ceasar ended the interview and Boyd left the stage the same way he came in, with confidence
Then he thought about his promise to Derek and frowned all the way back to the ninth floor and mumbled his promise to Erica one more time. "Together."
