It was half-past 11 on a summer night. A soft knock on my door woke me up from my deep sleep. I see Joji ushering me to come over towards him.
"What?" I said rubbing my eye as I yawned.
"Come on!" I follow behind him as he rushed quietly over to our bikes.
"Joji, where are we going?" I said hopping on.
"It's a surprise," he answers.
As we cycled through the streets of Kobe, Japan, The clanking noise of the repeatedly propelling chain and the scratchy sound of crickets resounded throughout the road. " Go go go..." he said pedaling faster. The cool breeze brushing onto my skin felt relieving in the warm weather, I felt light, as if I was flying with him.
"Here!" He gestured, "Here we are"
"What is this" I nervously chuckled, what stood in front of us were tall trees and bushes under the midnight sky. "I'm not going in there"
"Okay wait here in the dark for me then," he joked "you'll be safe, I'm here." He reached for my hand and turned the flashlight hanging on his belt loop.
We made our way deep into the forest. The crunching noise of dried leaves and twigs felt intimidating in the dark. "Joji, where are we"
He chuckled, "We're almost there, y/n" As we walked further into the woods, a small beam of light appeared from afar. We got closer and closer. "We're here"
The view revealed a simple view of a temple. Its structure was old but kempt well. With hands still connected, we went towards the sanctuary.
I felt like we were in a theater play, with the moonlight being our spotlight and the sanctum as our stage.
"So" he breathed out "this is my going-away-party"
I sighed and closed my eyes "Parties are for fun occasions only"
"Isn't this fun? he said grabbing ahold of my other hand, bopping left and right.
"Please don't make this harder than it already is" I squeeze my cheeks as a tear escaped freely from my eyes. "You fucker, I'll miss you." I drop my body to him as he welcomed me in a warm hug. "How can you promise you'll come back?"
"Hey," he said lightening up the mood "How is this for a promise?" He pulled a piece of silver chain with a small pendant from the back of his pocket, "Will you marry me?"
"Joji we're 18" I laughed.
"S-so?" His deep red face dropped, "Am I being rejected right now?"
"No, but..." I said lifting my shoulders.
"Okay fine, will you marry me when we're rich and old enough?"
I giggled at his remark, I leaned in closer to him and kissed his lips. "I will marry you, George Kusunoki Miller"
"fuck yes," he exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear. "I love you, y'n, more than anything"
With his forehead onto mine, both in each other's embrace, we swayed to silence under the starry night.
