The clock ticking loudly on the wall resounded throughout the whole room, it seemed like it was staring at me with judgment I couldn't comprehend.

1:45 am it showed. I put my fingers up and counted the difference in timezone "it should be 12-ish there..." I hovered over to the side of the bed to reveal, then again, a screen of zero notifications.

As the night fell later, the more impatient and uncomfortable I became, certainly, the continuous whining of crickets and the increasing temperature of the room did not help with the anxiety I was experiencing.

He probably forgot, maybe I should call him.

I grab ahold of my iPhone and decided to give Joji a call instead.

I tapped my index finger on the phone that was held up to my ear. The ringing took longer than usual, and before I was about to give up and give in to the idea of rest, "Hey, babe, I'm sorry" his voice sounded deeper on the line, it made me miss him even more.

"George?" my voice cracked, "it's me"

He softly giggled, "Hey you, what's up?"

"I'm good, love. You?"

"not good, just set up the apartment and.." he seemed out of breath

I frowned, blood rushed quicker as I answered. "hmm?"

"just, y'know moving in... and stuff." I could hear boxes dropping on the ground, "hey, I might have to call you soon, okay?"

"oh okay..."

"Get some sleep, alright?"

"Joji?"

"miss you"

"And I miss you more" he replied with a whisper. When the call ended, I sat up from the bed and let out a huge sigh. I looked onto my phone and not even 10 minutes have passed since I last checked the time.

I felt my phone vibrate as it lit up. A goodnight text, of course, he wouldn't forget.

text message from: Rei

I dropped myself onto my bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. Not too long after the last ding, another was received.

"hey, heard about Joji leaving for NY. maybe I could borrow some of your time now?  miss ya"

Rei, the nerdy yet charming boy next door Joji and I grew up with. As time passed, he slowly outgrew me-- he would only pay a visit over at Joji's, where Rei would mostly produce music and Joji would freestyle rap along. Receiving a text from him felt almost nostalgic, I missed him.

"I'm never busy, u r"

The three dots appeared from the left side of the phone, he replied

"Ramen breakfast like the old times?"

"you bet :)"

I press the home button on top of my phone and placed it onto the nightstand.  Although the few days were gloomy, it felt good to know that someone was there to be with. I close my eyes, and the sounds surrounding me softened, turning into a calmer tune. Slowly, I fell into a deep slumber
