The States are personified. After all, they have their own little governments. They all see America as either their big brother or their father. Countries such as Spain an France who had colonies in the current land of America have forgotten about them.
America uses this to his advantage sometimes. He is very protective and is very scared that the other countries will try to take his states away again. So, he keeps them a secret the best he can. He must be doing pretty well, seeing as he's had states for over 200 years!
The only ones who know and actually keep it secret are Canada, Prussia, and Denmark; the latter two found out by accident and Canada has his own Provinces, feeling the same fatherly fear as his brother.
