I pushed against the careers arm but she was stronger and had the knife at my neck. I felt it dig in to my skin when I hear a quit whistle. The career fell off me, dead. I looked around for the source of her death. I noticed a small red dart buried in her arm.
"We'd live longer with the two of us." I see Maysilee step out of the woods brandishing a blowgun.
"Guess you just proved that." I rubbed my neck. "Allies?" She nods
We rummage through the career's supplies taking the food and water. We start heading off in a new direction. We mostly walk in silence.
At dusk I volunteer first watch. The faces of the dead careers appear in the sky along with the tributes that died in the volcano. I look around the woods but mostly my eyes are drawn to Maysilee. She looks so peaceful. I wonder what she's dreaming because she is smiling in her sleep.
At midnight I wake her and she takes over the watch.
"Thanks." I say awkwardly. "For before I mean, with the careers."
"No problem." She says looking out at the trees. "Good night Haymitch."
"Night."
By the time the sun broke through the canopy of trees, Maysilee and I where walking in the same direction we had before. We ran into a few other tributes but we defeated them easily with the help of Maysilee's poison darts.
"We should take a break." She suggested the next day after we had been walking for about four hours.
"No we need to keep moving."
"Why?" She asked. I ignored the question and kept on moving.
We spent another night taking turns to be on watch. So far every night it had rained for half an hour during sunset. Together we devised a way to collect a lot of rainwater, which we would store in some water bottles we had collected from one of the tributes. During my turn for watch, I caught myself looking more at Maysilee then at the woods. I started to fiddle with one of her long blonde plaits. He hair was soft despite not being washed for about a week. She was smiling again in her sleep. She always had this sweet, innocent smile while she slept. I brushed a few loose strands of hair out of her face. In the moonlight she almost appeared to be glowing. It was then that I realised how beautiful she was.
"Night May." I whispered
Sorry it's short. I feel like I'm rushing a bit if you could let me know what you think that would be great.
