Today was the day of the interviews. My stylist dressed me in a sleek black suite and tie. I hated the outfit but whatever. At least some people might think I'm trying, not that it matters. All the girls are wearing these ridiculous puffy and frilly dresses. Maysilee wears and strapless blue number that she keeps tugging at.
Seeing me looking at her she says, "It's fitted all wrong and it keeps pinching."
"I didn't think clothes could hurt."
"Well they do. Shoes are worse though." She holds up a pair of stunning silver heels and grimaces. "I won't even be able to walk tomorrow with the blisters these'll give me." She sighs and shoves them on her feet.
We stand back stage for a while waiting for our time to be interviewed. When at last Caesar Flickerman calls my name Maysilee smiles and whispers a good luck.
"So Haymitch," Caesar says as I enter the stage, "What do you think of the games having one hundred per cent more competitors that usual?"
I shrug. "I don't see that it makes much of a difference. They'll still be on hundred per cent as stupid as usual, so I figure my odds will be roughly the same."
The audience laughs and I give them a half-smile. Caesar thanks me and I leave the stage.
Again in the evening I retreat to the rooftop. It seemed to be the only place I can get relative privacy, apart from when Maysilee decides to join me again.
"What now?" I ask her.
"I came to say you did well in your interview." She says. After a long piece of silence she continues, "You know, I think you're a better kid then people would let you believe." She said, looking out across the lights of the Capitol. "You're smarter then most of the tributes here. You could win."
"Well then you're the first – and last – person to think that." I replied dully
"You just need to let yourself believe you can live rather then all this doom and gloom about dying right off the bat. Not everyone who goes into the arena comes out, that's true. But someone does. Someone lives and I think it could be you."
"Whatever." I stood up and walked over to the door.
"Haymit-" Whatever she was going to say was cut off by the slamming of door behind me.
Yeah, yeah I know it's short but I'm trying OK. The bits of talking in the interview where quoted from the book and everything is owned by Suzanne Collins.
