"May!" I yell and run towards the sound. Even though our pact is broken I can't just leave her to die. I run faster then I have ever run before in my life. "May!" I call out again. I hear her scream again.
When I reach her I come just in time to see a candy pink bird with a ling thing beak skewer her through the neck. "May!" She collapses to the ground and I run over killing the bird with my knife. Blood ran down her neck and tears ran down her face. A gurgling sound came with every wheezy breath. Her hands fumbled at the collar of her jacket as she undid something gold. It was a small pin. She grabbed my hand and placed it on top.
"Take it." She gargled. We sat in silence for a long time as she slowly died. I cradled her hoping to give her one more heart beat, one more breath. "Haymitch." She gasped griping my hand with all her strength. Her eyes darted around seeing something I couldn't. "I'm Scared." Her voice was a whisper, barely audible over the wheeze of her pierced throat. "Don't leave me."
"I won't May. Maysilee I will not leave you." I was crying now as well. "If you don't leave me." She started coughing. Blood poured out of her throat and mouth. Then nothing. An eerie silence followed. Maysilee was dead. I stripped off the bottom of my shirt and poured some water on it. I used it to mop up her blood. Once she was clean I bent over her. I closed her eyes and softly kissed her forehead.
"Good night," I whispered, "Maysilee Donner."
