Chapter Two

The pairing of minds

I woke drowsily, pondering whether yesterday was a dream or reality. I yawned and stretched my arms sitting up as I did so. I hesitantly and slowly moved my delicate feet onto the ice cold floor that made a chill run mercilessly up my spine. I shivered and looked around, until I spotted my darling Bardolph, sleeping peacefully in his rocking chair. I took my left foot off the wooden floor and moved it forward, being quiet so I was not to wake him, but as my foot made contact with the oak creeeeekk! The ear piercing sound made me jump with shock and woke Bardolph up from his sound sleep. He glared at me, clearly not pleased with me disturbing him, because I knew as well as he did that he needed as much rest as possible in order to train me today.

“Good morning.” I said chirpily, hoping that he was in a good mood, which I clearly knew he wouldn’t be.

“Is it, because I don’t think so”. I felt guilt run through me and he just shrugged and turned in the chair pulling his blanket up higher over his shoulder trying to get back to sleep. I didn’t exactly know what to do, I wanted to please him but I could not do that until I could show him my skills in training later. But then something inside my head just clicked!

I searched for his mind trying to connect with him, it felt as if he was trying to block me out. When I finally connected with him, he wouldn’t listen, sorry.

No reply

Sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you... please reply or say something; I know you can hear me Bardolph.

I gave up, knowing that I had failed before I had even begun and sat on the bed with my head in my hands. ‘I can’t believe I was so stupid! Why couldn’t I have just stayed in bed and waited for him to wake, why!?’ I shouted at myself in my head over and over again. Then something touched me, literally. As I looked up I saw Bardolph, half smiling in that sexy kind of way. Well done Akima lesson one is complete. You have learned to connect to minds that are trying to block you out and been able to disconnect. But one thing that I want to make sure is for you never to wake me again. He sounded serious but with a hint of playfulness and sarcasm at the end. Half laughing at how stupid I was, how I had just completed lesson one without any knowledge or intention of doing lesson one, I replied, Don’t worry I will get used to sleeping in late for both of our benefits.

Good, now listen. Now that you have learned to embrace your power of the mind, I must tell you that it can only work at a certain distance, for the further you are away from who you are trying to contact the more energy has to be used.

I understand, but how will I know my energy limits so I don’t damage myself.

Well it’s hard to say, I can see that you know you have power, and you have used it, it’s just that you need to use it on a regular basis more and more every day to built up your core strength.

Ok! I will follow all of your lessons, instructions and complete any task you can throw at me! So give it your best shot.

Okay then, very well put.

The next thing I knew I was on the floor with a pillow on top of my head, and Bardolph standing over me smiling like the Cheshire cat! I knew that he threw it at me on purpose. He helped me up, grasping my arm with a tight grip and tugging me to my feet with his strong broad arms.

Oh sorry. He winked I thought you meant literally. He was bent over double laughing his head off and mumbling while doing so. I scowled at him, and then I suddenly had the greatest idea ever!

Oh no you’re quite right I did mean literally.

Huh?

As he straightened up I lifted up the coffee table by mumbling the words “Dėck’Na rû!” he fell to the floor, flat on his back as the small table hit him right in his beautiful face. He landed with a great ‘Thud!’ ARGGG! He screamed in pain. It was so loud I covered my ears trying to block out the screams, when I noticed it was in my head! I couldn’t block it out; it was as if he was groaning louder and louder. I knew I shouldn’t have thrown the table, and to be honest it wasn’t even that hard. I walked a few steps over to him and lifted away the smooth wooden object, revealing his face. It was covered in a silver liquid which I knew was blood.

This was my chance, my chance to show him that I was just as powerful at magic as he was. I had only ever fixed a few broken bones before, but that was on my own body. On another person it could take up a lot more energy than I am capable of, but there was no going back now; I broke his nose so I will fix it! I summoned the language of my race and hovered my hand over him, being careful not to touch his nose. “Flee mařka de sonke’anå”.  A green glow emerged from my palm, casting a light onto his pale face. I went from standing to kneeling as the power drained out of me a lot faster than I had thought. I couldn’t tell if my witchery was working until the light died down a bit.

As the colour returned to his face he opened his eyes. I brushed my hand across his burning forehead, wiping away the sweat beads coming from his brow. “Bardolph, can you hear me Bardolph?”

There was no answer.

His chest suddenly expanded and his breathing was heavy, a sigh of relief escaped my lips when I knew he was okay. I rolled him onto his back and placed a pillow underneath him. His eyes blinked twice, Bardolph sat up abruptly coughing and spurting everywhere. I patted his back but it didn’t help him. Water! Akima, get me water! I stood up looking around sharply but I couldn’t see a sink or tap in sight. I looked back at him desperately, he pointed at a door, still coughing; I ran over and pulled down the chrome handle that was engraved with ivy leaves. As I entered the room my foot slipped on the tile flooring and I fell heavily on my Coccyx, I struggled to stand up but did so knowing that it was to help Bardolph. The room was a kitchen, it consisted of a table, three chairs and a fruit bowl on it. Also across the back wall were kitchen cabinets and work surfaces and there was the sink! I ran to it cautiously making sure I didn’t slip again. I grabbed the glass next to the tap that had a pink liquid in it; I didn’t care what it was so I tipped it away. The tap spat out the water violently and fast, rinsing the blue rimmed glass in my hand. The water erupted over the edge so I turned the, again ivy engraved, silver tap off. Turning sharply on my heels I headed straight back into the other room. When I saw Bardolph my heart sank. There was blood everywhere, I knew that he must have been coughing it up because there was nowhere near as much blood as that when I left the room. I sprinted over to him just laying there, not moving. I shook him.

Nothing.

I shouted at him, calling his name.

Still nothing.

I couldn’t even talk to him though the power of our minds. What have I done...

Whatever I had done it was bad and I needed help, and fast. There was only one person who I could turn to...
