CHAPTER 3
My sister and I were sitting in my car in front of Jasmine's house as she went inside to retrieve her clothes for our sleepover. While we were waiting I decided to listen to the radio to cease the awkward silence that was present.
When I turned up the radio, the song Talk Dirty by Jason Derulo was on. This was one of the songs that both me and my sister loved; I had a feeling that it would cheer her up because it did for me. When I looked over to her I saw her fingers curled into a fist. I sighed and turned it down. I couldn't take the silence any longer.
"What is wrong, Tiff?"
"None of your business, " she snapped. "Just give me space."
I get ready to fuss her out, but I refrain from doing so. If I snap back, I know that the outcome wouldn't be pretty. So instead I just sit back and wait for her to burst. Just like I predicted, after a few seconds of awkward silence, she exploded.
"I hate him!" screamed Tiffany.
I look at her shocked. "I thought you loved his songs! What has Jason Derulo ever done to you?" I said, completely confused by the sudden outburst.
"No, I hate Michael. You know, your exboyfriend's partner in crime?"
"Okay, what did he do? "
"Everything! Ever since you and Jason broke up, he's been a pain. Now, that you aren't the center of their attention, I -",
"Wait, when was I ever the center of attent- hold up, you're telling me, you're mad at Michael because you're the center of his attention," I stop to look over at Tiffany. "What did you expect, Tif! You're a cheerleader, you are the school's spirt everywhere you go. You go out there onto fields and courts to hype up our players in front of everybody!" I lower my voice to almost a whisper, "Everywhere you go, you are the center of attention."
With that being said, I turned foward again, facing the street as I waited. The silence had come back. I figured that Tiffany was actually considering what I had just said. I took a sneak glance over toward her and I saw her gazing out the window as if she were in a trance.
After a while, the silence started to get unbearable. I thought to myself "What is taking Jasmine so long?" Instead of thinking more on the subject, I decided to just call her and ask her what was taking so long.
"Hey, you okay in there? "
"Oh, haha, yeah. I'm just trying to make sure I got everything. I'll be out in a little, I just gotta leave something for my brother. "
"Jazzie, your spending the night, not going away for vacation."
"I know, I know, but better safe than sorry. "
" Haha, alright. "
Just as I hang up the phone, Tiffany sticks me with "the question."
"Why did you and Jason break up?"
As much as I love my sister, I truly felt like slapping her. After all, she was there when I received that dreaded call from him and saw me burst into tears. Plus, I'm sure she knew why we broke up, I mean she's on the cheer squad! Nothing passes them. They know all the juiciest gossip.
I sigh before I speak. "You already know Tif, why are you asking me?" I say as I rub my temples, feeling a headache coming.
"If I knew, then I wouldn't be asking," she snapped back. "Today, I overheard one of the girls talking about what her and Jason had done. I then asked the girl if she knew that Jason used to be your man. All she did was laugh and walk away, so I asked my friend what was funny about what I said and she told me that I should ask you about why you and Jason broke up." She shrugged and continued, "something about hearing the truth rather than what people are saying."
I let out a shaky breath. I really didn't wanna bring up the memory of last weekend. Practice today had been heaven. Okay, I was slightly sore from squats, but the pain calmed me. During the brief scrimmage we had at practice, my mind was distracted from all my problems as I focused on the ball. Therefore after we won, I was feeling completely better. Good things never last, however.
I ran my fingers through my hair, slightly massaging my scalp, and sighed. Just then, I heard Jasmine put her bags into the car and get in.
"I'll tell you when we get home."
I looked back at Jasmine to make sure she was ready to go. The look on her face told me she knew what I had been talking about, that she understood. Seeing that she was in the seatbelt with her phone in her lap, I turned back around and turned the key in the ignition, making the engine come alive.
As I drove, Tiff reached over and turned the music up.
Normally I would get on her about touching my radio, but today, I didn't mind. I needed the music. I let the song Lips are Moving by Meghan Trainor slightly hyped me up as I drove down the street.
