A Reminder: the opinion of a lifelong dancer is what follows
Shoes have not, and never will be necessary. The ground is the ground, and the floor is the floor. There is absolutely nothing to fear from it. Admittedly, people do occasionally step on tacks and nails, and other horrible things of that variety. But, I've never heard of someone's shoes saving them from that fate.
Do you realize how thick the calluses on the bottom of my feet are? No. Of course not. Well, let me just clarify: these babies have got to be at least half an inch thick. That pedicure lady isn't getting anywhere near me. I need these calluses to survive.
Don't be mistaken, I think that shoes are cute. Definitely. But...they're cute on your feet. I raise free-range feet. I don't believe in confining them, no matter how cute the shoes may be.
Okay, so if I plan to take a three hour hike in the snow, yes, shoes may be necessary. But other than the purpose of, perhaps, warmth (in cases where socks just will not suffice), who needs shoes?
Disclaimer: I do, in fact, wear a sturdy pair of boots during extended snowy hikes.
