Nicki
"Girl, you owe me a favor," Nicki said to Cassie over the phone as she plopped on her round shaped bed and removed her snickers. She had just got home from school and did what she always did after school which was to face-time her best friend.
"For what, being polite? Girl bye," Cassie chuckled and Nicki kissed her teeth. "Was it this hard?" Cassie asked.
"I wish you could see the way he was looking at me. It was really awkward. And I'm pretty sure we'd still be holding hands right now if I hadn't retrieved mine first," Nicki said.
"Am I missing something? Why were yo guys holding each other's hands? I didn't know you was this forward Nicki. I see you," Cassie joked and wiggled her eyebrows.
Nicki cringed, "Ew! Cassie, no!" she interjected. "I never really talked to him before, I only wanted to be polite and introduce myself properly," she explained.
"Oh okay," Cassie said while taking a sip of whatever was in her cup and side eyed her before directing her attention to her laptop. Nicki rolled her eyes at her.
"I told you that boy was strange. He looked like the typical creepy boy you see in Criminal Minds," Nicki frowned at the memory.
Cassie laughed, "You're so over dramatic,"
"That's true though," Nicki said just as she heard the front door open. She then remembered that she hadn't lock the door once she had got inside the house and her heart beat increased. "Cas?" she whispered.
"Hm," Cassie directed her attention back to Nicki.
"Someone's in my house," Nicki said as she got up and went out of her room.
"Nicki, stop being stupid. It's either your Dad or Nanny," Cassie dismissed.
"Who is it?" Nicki called from the top of the staircase.
"It's Abraham Lincoln," she heard her father say causing Cassie to laugh.
Nicki glared at her, "Bye," she said then hung up without letting her respond and descended the stairs.
"Hey dad," she greeted him with a hug.
"Hey Nick Nack," he said and Nicki ignored the pet name he gave her. She had grown to dislike it but eventually gave in at making him forget it. "I have a gift for you," he smiled once they pulled away and Nicki frowned confusedly. She was used to him offering her presents regularly but it was getting a little tiring. Although she did love presents, Nicki didn't want her father to spent his money uselessly for her in exchange of his presence at home.
At only thirty-seven, Robert was the definition of businessman. He succeeded in building his own company while being a single parent and he worked hard to become the businessman he was today, in order to give Nicki everything she could possibly ask for. He would give her the world if he could and he was glad he could provide her every needs at this very moment.
"Dad, I told you to stop making me unnecessary gifts. You do know my birthday is in three months, right?"
"And? I didn't know I needed special occasions to make presents to my daughter," Robert smiled down at her.
"I don't want you to waste money on me,"
"You know money isn't a problem, " he chuckled slightly. "And it's not wasting if that's what I worked hard for Onika," he said. "If you want me to return it back, just say it," he held his hands up in surrender and Nicki rolled her eyes playfully. "Here," he smirked retrieving a small paper bag from his briefcase.
Nicki was about to open the bag when she stopped and looked at him suspiciously, "Why do I feel like there's something you wanna tell me?" she asked hoping she was wrong. But her thoughts were confirmed when he sighed. Nicki frowned, "What is it, Dad?"
"The office just called me, there's a problem with the company," he said. "I have to go to another trip. I'm leaving tomorrow night,"
"But you just got back," Nicki said. He had come back from his last business trip six days ago.
"I know but I can't do anything about it,"
Of course you can, you're the boss. Nicki thought and sighed, "How long do you have to go there?"
"Three weeks," he said and Nicki wasn't surprised. Again, situations like this had always been a sort of routine to her.
"And what about the exhibition?" she asked and Robert sighed audibly. He completely forgot about the science exhibition this Saturday. Nicki had always loved science and it seemed to be the only thing she was talking about lately. "Dad, you said you were going to go with me,"
"Nicki, we talked about this before I can do no other," he said. "Why don't you ask Cassie to go with you? I'm sure she'd want to,"
"She's going to her grandmother's this weekend," Nicki said looking down.
"Then ask another friend of yours. I spoke with Loretta and she agreed to look after you while I'm gone and Rihmeek will come with her too," he said. Loretta or Nanny, as Nicki and Cassie liked to call her, was Meek's aunt. She has been taking care of Nicki ever since she was little and she provided Nicki the mother figure she once had but lost. She took Meek under her wing when his mother died of cancer when he was fifteen. He and Nicki became good friends ever since, although their friendship was a little special since they liked to play the cat and mouse game.
"I'll make it up to you, I promise," Robert said and kissed her forehead. He didn't see her eyes brimming with tears.
"Okay," Nicki said quietly. "I'm going to sleep,"
"Already? Have you eaten already?"
"Um, yeah. I had a long day,"
"Alright. Sleep well princess," he said and gave her a hug. Nicki gave him a small smile before making her way back upstairs and wiped a single tear that had fell down her cheek. She closed her bedroom door and laid on her bed with her head facing the ceiling. She couldn't believe her father would do that to her again. Although the feeling she was experiencing wasn't a foreign one, she was convinced that he would make an effort for once and that they would spend the day together, away from any kind of stress.
She sighed and decided to get up to take a shower. After that, she took her time as she lotioned up her body and put on an oversized shirt. By the time she was done, it was a little after 7 p.m. so she decided to go ahead and prepare her outfit for tomorrow. She then made a little prayer before she got to bed and let sleep overtake her.
