The California sun warmed the sandy beaches with its golden rays. Children played in the waves, splashing their friends and running into them. The soft seagull calls echoed around the shoreline.

I looked down at my tan body under the tiny back bikini I had bought last fall, anxious for summer to start again. School had ended a couple of days ago and since then, I had only left the beach to eat, shower, or sleep. I couldn't help it. Something about the patterns of waves was calming.

"Kay!" I heard someone call.

I was half asleep under the sun, so I just left my headphones on. The black headphones that I had gotten as a gift when I graduated middle school. They had helped me when I was still living in that miserable...

"KAY!" Looked up from under my sunglasses and saw my best friend, May, staring down at me. I sat up and brushed the sand off of my legs. She was a tall brunette with legs that went on for miles. She was a good four inches taller than me and could easily pass for a runway model. Her dark brown hair was stick straight and ended just above her waist, blown back by the sea breeze.

"Hey, what's up?"

"You want to come to Justin's house, tonight? He's throwing a party to celebrate the end of junior year."

Ugh. I hated parties.

"I know what you're thinking bur before you say no, I just found out that Matt is going to be there."

My ears perked up at the sound of his name. He was May's twin brother. After I moved to Santa Cruz during freshman year, he became my best friend. We lived next door for a while, before my parents moved me to a bigger house. He looked like a male version of May, with the same dark brown hair and tall frame. When we hung out together, May would always be there but she always complained about being the third wheel and in a way, she was.

Of course, I fell for my best friend. I fell hard and landed flat in my butt.

He found out right before the end of school. It wasn't taken well and we hadn't spoken since then. I knew that Justin's party could be a way to fix it.

"Okay, okay," I said to May.

She smiled. "I'll be at your house at seven," she said, and th nen walked back down the beach. Typical May.

What have I gotten myself into?

******

At exactly seven, I heard May open the door of my beach house, letting herself in.

"Kay!" She called, loud enough for the Canadians up north to hear.

I ran out of my room and peeked my head down the staircase. "Geez May, I'm right here." I grabbed her hand and pulled her up the stairs. "Help me pick out something to wear."

When May saw my closet, she immediately started rummaging through, pulling out all of my clothes and tossing them on to my bed.

"You seriously have nothing," she said, going through the last outfit. "We need to go shopping."

I walked over to my closet, hopping over piles of clothes on the ground. Pulling out a white skater dress, I asked May, "Is this okay?"

"Eh... With the right accessories and makeup..." she trailed off.

An hour and a half later, we were finally ready. Grabbing my worn out Michael Kors bag, I followed May into her silver BMW.

When had parked the car outside of Justin's house, May looked over and gave me a long, hard look.

I squirmed a bit, feeling uncomfortable under he gaze.

"What..."

"What happened between you and Justin?" she asked in a quiet voice. "You used to be best friends and suddenly you're not talking and he tenses up every time I mention your name."

I knew that she would find out about it eventually, I just didn't expect it this soon. I took a deep breath, and explained the story, from the very beginning.

******

We had been at this damn party for too long.

My head was tipsy, under the influence of alcohol. May was nowhere to be seen, probably making out with some random guy. She probably didn't want to see me anyways, having stormed out of the car adter I told her what happened with her brother. She may seem like a brat sometimes but she was a good sister.

I hadn't seen Matt yet, so I didn't have a chance to explain. I had drunk too many red cups of beer to count, trying to dull the pain inside of me.

All around me, sweaty bodies grinded up against each other. The music was deafening, further muddling my thoughts. Picking up my almost empty cup, I pushed through masses of people, desperate for a breath of fresh air. When I reached the front door, a flash of black hair caught my eye.

Matt.

He was walking towards the beach and I ran behind him, calling his name. "MATT!"

He turned his head and when he saw me, his body went rigid. His paces slowed as he waited for me to catch up with him. "Matt," I said quietly. He was wearing a tee shirt with one of the bands he liked on it, with dark jeans and white vans. His hair was messy in the most perfect way, as always.

"Kay..." he responded, looking around.

I could hear the tension in the air, threatening to shatter.

"I- I'm sorry," I stuttered out.

"It's okay," he replied and flashed me a heartbreaking smile. I felt as if he had driven a knife into my heart. "I'm sorry too. I can't love you the way you want me to." He was twisting knife.

I looked up at the black night sky, trying to stop the hot tears from spilling over. A few traitorous ones escaped, leaving black trails down my cheeks. When he saw, he reached over and brushed them off.

I couldn't stop it. I caved in on myself. My face became a canvas for the tears, destroying my makeup as I desperately tried to stop them. Matt pulled me into his warm arms and let my tears soak his shirt. After a long while, I looked back up and into his dark eyes.

"I should probably go... It's getting late."

I looked on as he walked away from me and away from everything we had ever known.

He looked over his shoulder one last time. "Goodbye Kay," he said.

I stared at him until he passed out of view. "Goodbye Matt," I whispered to myself.

******

I walked from the party back to my house. The sound of waves and the night air helped the hurt. I held my high heels in my hand along with my phone.

Where had I gone wrong with Matt? Everything was so simple before, yet I had managed to destroy it. I ruined everything beautiful. No wonder everyone hated me.

Riiinnnggg, riiinnnggg, riinnnggg!

My phone screen lit up, pulling me from my thoughts. I looked at my caller ID. It was my dad. He usually didn't bother to call and the fact that he called at this hour at night worried me. I picked up.

"Kay! Sweetie we've missed you so much," his voice greeted.

My head hurt like it had been hit by a brick and I had been to hell and back lately. I was in no mood to deal with his bull. "What do you want, dad?"

"Well," he said, sounding hurt. I couldn't care less. "Me and your mother were talking and we agreed that you living out it California just isn't working for us. You live so far away and since you're only a year away from being in college, we though that it was a time for a change."

He certainly had my attention after that. "What are you saying?"

"Kay, darling, you're moving back to New York."

My phone crashed to the ground.

I'm going back.
