Shading and other effects can be cool, but they are really easy to over do. You can't just randomly put effects.
For example, you can't just boost the colour, shade the edges and make it gritty. Pick one of them... I would pick none of those, but that's just me, I usually pick grayscale, or something else that isn't too much. Again, the simpler, the better.
Shading is a huge thing too. Don't be afraid to add cool shading in the background and things. Why not put a shape behind the title? A bad suggestion, but make it look cool. Just be sure not to over do it!
